Frustrating to use on the subway
I mostly open this app on the subway but for years the experience when there is intermittent connectivity has been poor and unchanged. I don’t understand why I am able to watch videos on Instagram in between subway stops but this app struggles to get the five letters it needs for today’s Wordle.
If you try to open a non-crossword game you’ll get a loading spinner when the connection is poor and have no way to go back (say to play the crosswords, which are the only ones that seem to be available offline). I constantly have to quit this app to try to get it to download Wordle or Connections. I

Great game, but…
This was my go-to game when I was bored for a long period of time. It was a bit annoying when one of my favorite games was switched to only being accessible in the paid version (when it wasn’t before,) but the nail in the coffin was one update.
I opened the app as usual, where it gave me the notification that the app needed to be updated. I clicked the button to download it, where it took me to the App Store… where it said there were no new updates. Confused, I returned to the app, where it said plain as day that I needed to download a new update to play. Eventually I figured out that my phon

Simply the best
I don’t really understand the difference, but I know what I like. NYT just makes the best puzzles. Some of them are just so creative in how they work a theme into the grid.
The great thing about the app is that it’s fun knowing what your records are. The stats show clearly how Monday is the easiest day, then the solve times stair step upward through the rest of the week. It’s a great feeling to know your time is faster than your average for that day of the week, but the best is setting a new low solve time record.
I look forward to each creative puzzle and prefer not to start my day with

Add my voice to the discontent with the upgrade
It’s incomprehensible why you would purposely exclude so many long-time loyal subscribers and players from the new upgrade. I too am shutout from playing anything on my tablet because it can’t upgrade to 18 which is just pain stupid and also pretty insulting. So much for the Times valuing its subscribers.
Fortunately I can still play on my phone or occasionally on my laptop but the real pleasure was the tablet. And by the way, I quit playing the Tiles a very long time ago because the repetition and rotation of the same games got extremely boring and the opposite of challenging. But as a resul

New feature not good
The app works to my satisfaction pretty well but the new feature that opens the Wordplay crossword column inside the app is flat out bad and unhelpful. I liked being able to open the column in a browser window so I could quickly swipe back and forth between Safari and NYT Games when I needed a hint. Now I have to tap to open Info then tap to open Column then scroll down to what I need then back out and back out again, and by the time I’m back to the puzzle I’ve forgotten the answer/hint I went to find.
And if I want to open the column myself in a webpage I have to go search for it then figure

Screen reader accessibility broken with version 6.25
Hello. I just wanted to make the developer aware of the fact that with version 6.25 the screen reader accessibility of the friends leaderboard no longer works. I am using an iPhone 15 Pro running iOS 26.4.2 and I use the voice over screen reader because I am blind. I can scroll up and down for the Wordle and connections leaderboard, however the mini crossword leaderboard is the only thing that appears even if I have selected Wordle or connections. Thus, I cannot see how my friends and I compare with each other. Your accessibility team has done a wonderful job with The New York Times family of

Pipsqueak
Pips should be a fun game but the UI/UX is terrible. The pieces are at the bottom of the screen, so when you drag them up to the board it’s very easy to trigger an iPhone’s active app browser function. The game makers don’t have iPhones? They didn’t hear that they got rid of home buttons and now you swipe up from the bottom to switch apps?
And why have the pieces so far from the board in the first place? It makes the game harder because of another design flaw: if I’ve placed a piece and then want to rotate it and move it to another spot, I’m cooked. If I don’t need to rotate it, easy, I just d

Fun Game(s)* bad Experiences
I have a love hate relationship with Wordle with a recent trend on not only double letters but also just not even real words lol. There were several fun games you could play but now it’s all locked behind a paywall which is very disappointing since they have enough money as is. Mini Cross, Letter boxed hell even the motif game is all locked, can’t even make your own wordle which is funny since you can do it for free still just not ‘official’. the ads too are abysmal, half the time they don’t even load which i wouldn’t even mention but for such a basic set of games the optimization is off. very

Please show us BEST time not AVERAGE time
Please, app writers, think about what you’re showing people in the crossword summary when you finish. You tell us that we solved in 1:00 faster than our average time. Who cares? I want to know if I beat my BEST TIME. In fact several times lately, I’ve beat my best time for a particular day and the app never even tells me. I only know because I went and looked in the statistics page (which you recently made ridiculously uninformative by separating current, average, and best into completely separate tabs). Please y’all, think about what people actually want to see on these screens.

Great app, could be better
I am mostly happy with this app. I like that the Times has carefully added puzzles over recent years. Even the ones I don’t play myself look clever, and fill a need. I do mane some notes:
The Midi isn’t on my iPad app. I even deleted and reinstalled it in case I missed an update. It is on my phone app, and I enjoy playing, but it should be on both.
When the app first rolled out I noted that it didn’t provide for printing it the puzzles. It still doesn’t. An easy feature to include, but the Times, like so much of corporate America seems obsessed with not only controlling its content but ho

Love the games but
I play the mini crossword and sudoko religiously, and the others here and there. I don’t mind if the next day puzzles start the evening of the day prior because I can still do the mini crossword with the archive feature and the game doesn’t change the stats date to the next day until my phone says it’s the next day. This review would get a five star if at least sudoko (biased, since there are three games that don’t archive) also had an archive feature. I would love to finish the current days puzzle before it reloads to the next day, and I love sudoku so much that I would like to get archived g

Used to be so good, but then the update
Hi. I never payed for any subscriptions, but the game is still fun. I love doing wordle. Sadly, as I was logging on to it today, for I haven’t played it in a while, it said, “please update.” There was no X, so I just hit, “sure.” It brought me to this screen and the little app had a little “open” button near it. Had it already updated? When I clicked “open” I got back to the game. Again, it said, “this version is old. Please update.” With no X, I hit, “okay.” Again it brought me back to this page, and it said, “open.” It will not let me update. 😢 pls fix.

Cancelling my NYT sub over this
The NYT Games app requires users to have the most recent iOS update installed on their phones to use the app. No, you can’t use an older version of the app because the moment you open the app it tells you it’s out of date (no longer supported) and sends you back to the App Store. This is not the first app I’ve seen do this. Many apps are now requiring users to, essentially, buy a new phone to continue using them. In some cases, users can no longer access their own intellectual property because it’s being held hostage by Mac’s insane “upgrade every year” business model. Hey, Mac… and you, too,

NYT bricked this app for owners of older devices
NYT attempting to force all app users to update to the newest version has locked out their paid subscribers from this app!
I own a first-gen iPad Pro 10.5”. It’s not even 10 years old yet, still runs great. Even though it cannot be updated with iOS 18, most of the apps I use regularly are still operating just fine on iOS 17. The NYT Games app’s newest version is iOS 18 only. And they will not let you use the app if you don’t have that/can’t get it on your device; a pop-up appears that can’t be cleared by the user until the app is updated!

Agree with Thunder-Paws 100 (new version requires new devices)
While I can use Games on Safari, there’s no complete dark mode for both Wordle and Spelling Bee alike. The games load slowly in browser (safari or chrome): especially, pips. Older versions of the app (a mere 2-3 months ago as of Feb 2026) even if they limit some new game functions (eg creating your own wordle ) are preferable to browser use. Older software options made available need only carry a caveat in clear terms and indicate that newer game functions are available via browser. This is unnecessary forced obsolescence if the user agrees to limited functionality. Moreover, my device has amp

Cannot download new Crossword app without buying a new iPad!
I share the frustration of the other reviewers who are now locked out of their NYT games subscription because the updated app requires a version of iOS that is not supported on their devices. This is really frustrating! I assume the NYT did not anticipate that their new app would evict some subscribers from the (already paid for) app. Or is the NYT in cahoots with Apple to cajole subscribers to buy a new device that supports the more recent versions of iOS? Can the NYT please restore the earlier version that worked for everyone? (Does the NYT read these reviews?)

The Indispensable
Like most of my friends and family, I almost never go a day without playing the NYT games. I want to know how my Wordle results compare, whether it took 2 tries or 6. The crossword is my daily companion, the best accompaniment to a good cup of coffee I can imagine. I marvel at the humor, creativity, and cleverness of many of the puzzle constuctors and I pick up odd facts and sly references most every puzzle. Some days I only have a few minutes to spare. Other days I have a voracious appetite for puzzles and I do them all. But whether the time I can give is short or long, opening this app is li

Recently renewed my subscription after becoming hooked on the daily games. I am disappointed and angry that I can no longer use the app on my iPad that will not update to iOS 18. I was content to keep using the app the way that it was and visit the website to play anything that wasn’t in the app. Now I can’t use the app at all. One day I was playing my daily games; the next, I was forced to update my app. When the app failed to load, I was told that it requires iOS 18 and above. My three year old iPad will only accept up to iOS 17, so now I can’t use the app.
Couldn’t you have left the older app functional for people who haven’t got the money to continually buy the latest devices? I’ve invested a year’s subscription for these games of which I suppose I’m going to lose five months. The games are great, but thee try price has gotten too high for me to use my subscription.

Older iDevices Kicked Out!
Why are you doing this to me (and thousands and thousands of others)!? I am a long time subscriber to your news, games, and more and here you are relegating me to the waste bin just because my device is old. What? Are we supposed to create more electronic waste by tossing our perfectly good devices? Your organization has been highly regarded by me, until now. Who? in your organization made this egregious decision? Rein them in along with their thinking and allow our devices that cannot cannot be upgraded to your absurd standards to continue as they have done for years!

Games are fun but NYT locks more and more behind paywall
I’ve played the NYT games now for the better part of 3 years, and I do enjoy the games that they have on offer for non-subscribers. However, I’m becoming more disappointed in the experience. NYT seems to be locking more and more of its features behind the paywall. The daily crossword mini used to be available for non-subscribed users, now it’s locked behind the paywall. Stats on various games used to be available, now also locked behind their paywall. It’s not enough that they get ad-revenue from non-subscribed users. My guess would be they want user’s data so that they can turn around and sel

Make a subscription only version that works on older OS
I’ll bet if you made a version that continued to work on < os 18 that required a subscription you could get more people subscribing. This would be a win win.
This suite of games now requires os 18 or grater. If developers choose they can compile this game for older os. It is just a combination of laziness on the developers part and Apple making it slightly harder to compile for this. There is nothing in the NY times apps that explicitly requires os 18 functions. My iPad Pro can handle it if they would let me.
My other choice is spending $1000 for a new I-Pad Pro. Not happening.

Fun But Paywalled Heavily
I do love the compiled access to all of the daily games that NYT publishes and orchestrates, they’re usually pretty enjoyable and unless you have nothing to do all day they add a little flair to your day, something small to look forward to. However I personally find it discouraging to be locked behind paywalls for certain games. Namely Spelling Bee, which locks you before you’ve even gotten 1/3 of possible points, I personally don’t want to spend $6 just to simply “beat” the game or get a score higher than roughly 40.
Access to older/previous days I understand the appeal of, and since NYT has

The games are wonderful but the new paywall is disappointing
Me and my now husband have played the free games for years, as we are young and focused on saving money so can’t afford the subscription. We recently had a baby so being able to buy that subscription is even farther out of our view.
Our favorite game was the Mini Crossword. We were under the impression that the mini crossword existed for people who could not afford the monthly subscription but still wanted to get to enjoy a fun crossword puzzle. Suddenly it was put behind a paywall, at the same time that ads were introduced. We understand that money is important for the company, but it seeme

Well done
All in all, excellent work. Just challenging enough to be satisfying - that can be a tough balance point. Good assortment, easy enough to play the puzzles I enjoy and ignore what I don’t.
Pips is a relatively new addition and I do enjoy it. It’s a fun way to spend a few minutes of my day. I just wish it supported Apple Pencil. For whatever reason, on my iPad Pro, I can move the dominoes just fine with Apple Pencil, but tapping to rotate only works about 10% of the time. It’s very strange, and a little annoying since I use the pencil for nearly everything else on the tablet aside from that one

Still No Actual Dark Mode
"Dark mode is now available everywhere!"
No it isn't. First of all, some of the games (Pips for one) still doesn't even have a dark mode toggle. Second of all, the "Auto" option (i.e., responding to your device settings) for the "universal dark mode" only applies to the home pages of the app, not the actual gameplay pages. There still is no option to have the gameplay screens respond to your device's dark/light mode, which means I will continue to play in my browser, where I have an extension that turns the page dark when I have dark mode enabled (since I only enable dark mode at night).

My winning streak curtailed by bugs
I play Wordle every day. From time to time, my winning streaks end, not because I miss a day or get a wrong answer or fail to complete the puzzle, but because the app loses track of my streak. This is annoying. It often happens when I’ve been in areas of marginal internet connectivity, not because I don’t have any connection all day, but because the app seems to think it recorded my results, but doesn’t effectively synch them when I’m back in good internet connection. In other words good internet every day at some point, but a failure in the app (a bug) to synchronize the results with the serv

Was good, now very glitchy
The Pips game was a great addition, but really only replaced the daily crossword now being paywalled. Additionally, the Pips sometimes get cut off by the bottom of my screen making it unplayable. How exactly does that happen on a still-supported iPad? Strands is okay, but gets kind of annoying because big fingers need to be too precise. There should be an option to make the letters bigger on larger-screen devices so you don't have to enter the same word three times before it finally gets recognized. Finally, it will sometimes log you out so you lose your stats. When it does this, it doesn't al

Canceling My Subscription!
I’ve been playing these games daily for well over a year. They’re fun, but occasionally glitchy (which is par for an online game). Yesterday, my game glitched again and randomly erased a day from my Strands history, losing my streak. Which is annoying, but these things happen.
I filled out a bug report, expecting nothing. I received a reply, which appears to be AI generated, that was 1) completely unhelpful and 2) reads as both condescending and thoroughly insincere. No response at all would have been infinitely preferable to the message I received that said losing my “hard work” was “not id

Overcharged $20/month
The app is ok, I don’t like that even in dark mode the main page is still bright white as I play at night to help me fall asleep. But do NOT pay for the $4.99 subscription - I used this app for years and at some point they started charging me $25/month instead of the $4.99 subscription I confirmed I actually had through Apple. When I called for a refund the agent was clueless and clicked around in silence for a bit saying he couldn’t find anything, and then we got disconnected. I haven’t checked yet to see how far back the overcharges went but I have gotten no response on my written communicat
