Frustrating, algorithm based app
I don’t usually write reviews but since I paid for this one I feel compelled. What this app is: a very basic running app for beginning runners that serves to gameify your run training if you desire that kind of motivation. However, if you like complex games this will surely disappoint. I have no doubt Hal consulted on this. But do not confuse this for coaching. There’s nothing individual about it. Super helpful! Edit to add a small complaint
This app is going to be a game changer for me. As a mom of 3 busy kids and going back to school I do not have the mental energy to plan workouts let alone a several month journey to my first marathon. I love how I can enter my race day, my standing rest day, the days I am available, and my goal pace. It lays it all out for me so I don’t have to. I also love the “Hal says” feature. It’s very encouraging, even when I skip a day! My race isn’t until June and it is giving me maintenance runs so I’ll be ready to start officially training in January.

Very Helpful
Was never a “runner” until my first 10 mile race. I never thought it would be possible for me to run 10 miles nonstop at a fairly decent pace, so I knew I would need a little help to train.

Unrealistic taper week
I have ran plenty of half marathons and races. I thought I would download this specific app since my brother-in-law uses it. I chose intermediate training plan to have more accountability with running and I notice the week before my race it scheduled the most miles in my training like a total of 32 miles. Which is considered peak training. That from experience usually happens like at least 3-4 weeks before your race.
A week before your race is called your taper and training needs to be dropped at least 60-70% to allow your body for active recovery. The other weeks beforehand barely scheduled

i used Run With Hal to train for my self-directed marathon when i was 15, having ran my first half marathon prior, the app helped me continue on to the next level while encouraging healthy rest before starting my next plan and reminding me of the importance of rest days and cross training. since then i have taken a break from consistent running and have just started back up 2 years later, with the intention of getting back into shape before training for my next race. Hal + app not worth it
I want to preface this is saying this is my first time following one of Hal’s plans but not my first time training for a half marathon. I will say overall I liked the set up of the runs each week and will continue to use Hal’s training plans BUT will not be using the paid version of the app.
Some things I didn’t like:
1: there were a lot of glitches when completing a workout. For example for my race day after I entered it it said “oh no you didn’t complete your workout” but I did? This happened on MANY occasions throughout training cycle.
2: it doesn’t let you change your run days around

I’ve used Hal’s training plans for years so I was thrilled to see he had an app as well. I love my current beginner 10k plan (I took some time off from running for a knee injury so having the option to lay a new foundation at my own pace has been great!), however, I started using the app 5+ months before my planned 10k race and the app only shows me the first 3 months of the plan. Even if the plan changes or adapts as I log each run, I’d still like to see the whole plan up to the date of my race, not just the first 3 months of it. I started using this app a few months ago doing a base building program for a half marathon. I am not a runner and have managed to go from barely 5 min of running at a time to 4+ mile sessions. I love how straightforward the plans are to follow! I do not like that the text on the day doesn’t always line up with the workout assigned. For example, on a 2 mile recovery run (which is supposed to be at an impossibly slow pace of 18min/mile) the text box says that I’m running 3 (wrong mileage) miles at my normal pace (not even close to 18min). First the good points. I started using this app and the plan it gave me looked to be very difficult to keep with. I decided to push myself though and found my body responding in ways that it hadn’t in many years and I was very excited about that. At first, I loved this app. But a few weeks in, I started to notice a few issues. About 10 weeks into my plan, I was forced to start a new training plan because the app no longer took into account my preferred days for running. Technical support told me there was nothing they could do so I had to archive the progress I had made up to that point and start again. I have been using Hal’ training program for years, it has been my go to. Any time I had a run to train for I would pull up the Hal training chart for whatever distance I was running. I’ve read most of Hal’s books by now, and have a good understanding of his training plans. I’ve ran 3 marathons, but have never tapped into my full potential. I found this app to be incredibly frustrating on many levels. There is no flexibility or ability to adjust dates or make edits. The app schedule doesn’t even mirror the schedule Hal outlines for his program (intermediate 2). So what’s the point if it doesn’t even match his training plan? Every marathon/half/ultra I’ve ever run has followed a Hal Higdon plan. As others have stated, the lack of flexibility is a dealbreaker. I could get past the poor UI (ex- it is difficult to tell which day you are looking at- seems like the days of the week should move carousel style like the daily workouts do) if the app functioned well, but not being able to do simple things like switch my run days around makes this a no go. I really like the idea of this app. It’s easy to use and I like that there are descriptions for each workout. I’ve run 7 marathons (and probably 30 halfs) using pretty much the same plan and am looking to follow a new plan while training for my 8th marathon after having a baby last year. I bought this because I had heard so many good things from a friend who has used his run/walk approach. I can’t tell if the app facilitates this element of his approach at all. You cannot set it to give you intervals as far as I can tell. I have been a runner in the past, I am back at it after taking a break from an injury. As a busy professional who’s daily success relies on the efficient use of time, this app is a blessing! I feel like I have an actual coach preparing my workout plans. Simple. Effective.
Simple interface that is easy to navigate. I signed up for Hal+ which is worth every penny. I have a Garmin watch that connects my runs. You can also enter manually which is a breeze. I like that I can rate workout difficulty and log fatigue levels to look back on.
Tracks total miles, sets outline for upcoming 10 training days, adjusts program on the fly to amount of run days/off days/long day. I can modify a run week to less days or different schedule if I’m going out of town yet never feel like I am sacrificing the program and effort for the upcoming race.

Hal's plans are great, and the app should be about helping you choose, schedule, and track the best plan, which it does kinda. The plans are inflexible: if you want to make a change, you have to delete the whole thing and start over-- except you can't delete it, it's archived. The archive is where you keep your completed plans, but since you can't delete anything, you have all of your completed plans with all of your trashed plans. There's no way to "look at" at a plan without creating it, so you create it, realize you want to adjust something, trash that plan and then you have to go back and

This novice runner and USMC Veteran is determined to run the Marine Corp Marathon this year. Being a novice I had no idea where to begin in preparation. It’s worth every penny to pay for the full blown app! I have a consistent weekly schedule I customized. The distance and duration of every run is calculated to get you to your goal. I ran cross country & track in high school, but just stuck to working out in a gym after that.
