What’s New Version 6.2.1

Enhanced analytics consent options Bug fixes

Description

The urge to self-harm is like a wave. It feels the most powerful when you start wanting to do it. Join over 2 million users and learn to ride the wave with the free Calm Harm app by choosing activities from these categories: Comfort, Distract, Express Yourself, Release, and Random. There is also a breathing technique to help be mindful and stay in the moment, regulate difficult emotions and reduce tension. When you ride the wave, the urge to self-harm will fade. Calm Harm is an award-winning app developed for teenage mental health charity stem4 by Clinical Psychologist Dr. Nihara Krause, in collaboration with young people, using principles from the evidence-based Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT). It is built to NHS standards and approved by ORCHA. Calm Harm provides some immediate techniques to help break the cycle of self-harm behaviours and explore underlying trigger factors; build a ‘safety net’ of helpful thoughts, behaviours and access to supportive people; and provides the opportunity to journal and self-reflect. It also provides signposts to help. The Calm Harm app is private, anonymous and safe. Reviews from Calm Harm app users: • ‘This app helps me so much. I can't thank you enough for improving my life.’ • ‘I was told by my support worker to download this, best thing I ever did!! It’s helped me a lot through the tough times and I would definitely recommend this!!!’ • ‘This app saves lives. It is a beautiful, beautiful tool. Thank you endlessly.’ Awards for Calm Harm include: • Health Tech Awards Winner ‘Best Healthcare App of the Year’ 2021 • Digital Leaders 100 Awards Winner ‘Tech for Good Initiative of the Year’ 2020 (for stem4’s app portfolio, including Calm Harm) • Third Sector Awards Winner ‘Digital Innovation of the Year’ 2019 Please note that the Calm Harm app is not a substitute for the assessment and individualised treatment by a health/mental health professional. Please also note that if you forget both your passcode and security answer, these cannot be reset as we do not create user accounts. You will need to reinstall the app, losing any previous data.

In response to user feedback, the streaks functionality has now been updated to allow for new users to change the start date of their streak within the app, to accommodate for streaks that began prior to downloading the app. New users who would like to edit their streak start date to a date in the past can tap the pencil icon next to “Streak started on…” in the My Streaks section. This allows the user to select a different date for their streak to begin counting from. Please note: this functionality is only available to users who haven’t yet ended their first streak in the app. Additionally, in line with our policy to review the signposts within the app every 3 months to ensure all information is correct and up to date, minor edits have been made to some of the signposts.

Calm Harm has been given a new look and updated to the latest technology. We’ve listened to users and enhanced the app’s functionality, adding the ability to make journal entries at any time and the option to select multiple reasons for your urge to self-harm after completing an activity. We’ve also updated and expanded the choice of activities based on user suggestions. Other new features include automatic activity suggestions based on your previous use, the option to record streaks and earn awards for continuing to resist the urge, and a ‘safety net’ of things you can do and people you can contact when you need that extra bit of support. What else is new? • Users can add activities to a ‘Favourites’ list. • The mascots are now enhanced by animations throughout the app. • Choose from a wider selection of colour schemes. • Easier access to immediate help via the breathe activity, both during onboarding and in the footer of the app itself. • We’ve removed the option to set a passcode to access the whole app and, instead, the self-monitoring section can now be passcode-protected or accessed via facial recognition / Touch ID. • Tours explaining key features of the app. What is staying the same? • The app is clinically-developed by a Consultant Clinical Psychologist in collaboration with young people. • Optional passcode-protection (though now only for the self-monitoring section). • Users choose 5-minute or 15-minute activities (from the same categories as before), counted down by a timer, that are based on the principles of a treatment technique called Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT). • Users can still record experiences in the log section (now called My Records) and see information such as weekly average urge strength, most common urges, and most active time of day. • The app is completely free, with no in-app purchases required. • Users are shown signposts to further help. • Our commitment to data privacy and user anonymity. • No need for data or WiFi access to use the app. • Built to UK National Health Service standards and approved by ORCHA. • Users can still personalise their experience. • The option to hide trigger activities. You’ll be shown simple tours to guide you through the app. And don’t worry, existing users will have their data moved over to the new version automatically.

I love it so far
I feel like this app is so far really helpful, but it can be hard to do some of the distraction things.

perfect in every way
this app helped me through so much. it is so perfect in every way shape and form. the little characters are so cute and soothing and the app itself reminds me of a nice cool bed to lay down in when all things go wrong. I always had an issue with storage but this heaven sent gift doesn’t even take up 50 mb. from the bottom of my heart id like to thank the developer(s) with every fiber in my body and every place on it that is clean of scars. thank you

Could you make another offering for addiction help?
I personally don’t struggle with self-harm, but I do have issues with addictive tendencies. It seems like there’s a surprising amount of overlap when it comes to how self-harm and addictive urges work, so I tried Calm Harm out to see if it’d help. Sure enough, it does. I was wondering if the dev team might be able to add some sort of offering specifically for people who struggle with addiction as well. Not to diminish the importance of helping others who struggle with self-harm, that’s an issue close to my heart in many ways as well. But I think many of the techniques used in the existing app

i was shown this app by someone i spoke with on a hotline a few years ago, i was younger and scared and didn’t have resources but this app is so so good at what it does, very helpful and the visuals themselves are good distractions. also very happy for the queer identity options in settings + no dumb in-app money-hungry purchases means so much to me. thank you :-)

Love it
I love tracking and seeing my progress. Just makes me proud of myself. What I would like and suggest is adding widgets. I would love to have it on my Home Screen so I could see it without opening the app! Other than that I love it and have been using it for years.

Incredibly versatile and effective
Not only is this app incredible for managing s/h urges, but for other struggles I've had with feeling overwhelmed by emotions, but also helped to manage stronger feelings of anxiety.

Already in love
I just downloaded the app and I’m already tearing up. I went through an extensive DBT program and this app focuses on a lot of the same principles I am already familiar with. One of my biggest triggers is idle hands. I get so antsy and bored and then overwhelmed by the tightness in my chest and paralyzed by options. It causes me to spiral and make impulsive decisions with negative consequences. It’s so refreshing to have a list of activities that are ACTUALLY doable for a neurodivergent person. Just taking a look around in this app reminded me that there are so many more ways to practice self

saved my life multiple times
i first downloaded this app when i was 15, i’m turning 21 soon. i cannot tell you how thankful i am for this app. it worked so well i stopped using it about two years ago. even though every working coping skill i’ve learned has been from this app, i nearly forgot about it until today. worst panic attack i’ve had in my life, and it pulled me out of it in 2 minutes. rather, my thankfulness did. i was always partial to the comfort and release exercises. I did one of each and calmed myself enough to write this review. it’s not appropriate for me to describe the trenches i’ve been through, but in a

CalmHarm
It’s a pretty decent app. It’s help full when your feelings to self harm are like in between low and mid. But if you really feel like your going to it’s not the best. It does keep your streak and has a journal and stuff. You can either do a 1 min or 15 min exercise. Overall I think it’s pretty good

Devs plz read this!!!
THIS APP IS AWESOME!!! Loves 💖 but I was wondering if you guys could add some more options/ activities. It’s AMAZING as I said but I’d really like more things whether it be loud or quiet cuz I get urges late at night but my mom has me go to bed at 8pm. And she hears one little creak and she is like “WHY ARE U UP?!” So yeah, would totally love more activities. LOTS OF LOVE :]

Final assessment: 4.2 out of 5 stars
Adolescents can be particularly susceptible to self-harming behavior due to the unique state of a teen’s brain development. The Calm Harm app can offer support for adolescents who are navigating the challenges of self-harming behavior, especially when their developing brains are largely characterized by a more emotionally aroused limbic system and a still maturing frontal cortex. In his book Age of opportunity: Lessons from the new science of adolescence, developmental psychologist Laurence Steinberg characterizes the burgeoning interplay of these two regions during this phase akin to the rela

Great App to Practice DBT Skills
As a Social Worker, I find that this app is great for those struggling with self-harm as it introduces them to emotional regulation and other DBT skills. Also appreciate that the app is discrete, can be used in various settings (at home, at school, in public, etc), and is accessible for many people at no cost!

Review calm harm
The Calm Harm App is a helpful, visually stimulating, and easy to use tool for adolescents to “ride the wave” or resist the urge to self-harm. It uses evidenced-based intervention strategies in efforts to break unhealthy self-harm patterns and does so in a user-friendly and age-appropriate way. For these reasons, I am rating the Calm Harm App a 4 out of 5. Laser & Nicotera (2021) describes the “roller coaster” of emotions that many adolescents feel in their development stage. Sometimes adolescents have difficulty naming emotions and connecting them with events or thoughts that preceded th

So helpful
I downloaded this app when I was really struggling. I downloaded a lot of others too cause let’s be real I was pretty desperate and this one made the others look horrible. It’s free. It’s a tracker for how long your streak is. It has little cartoon characters. And it’s helpful for when you just need a little boost and when you REALLY need help. There’s 5 minute things and 15 minute things to do. I personally enjoy the five minute ones more because I have the attention span of an almond. I’m currently at 465 days. I never would’ve gotten to this or even six months without this app. I really do

still wonderful after 5+ years
i downloaded this app ages ago when i was in a really bad spot and never ever wanted to delete it. back then, it helped me calm down and sit through my urges, and it still did that today when i opened it up again. i don’t use it as much as i used to, but it has been something i can always fall back on. it’s wonderful to see how much the app has genuinely improved! some of these apps end up getting greedy and gross but you can tell the people behind this genuinely just want to help. thanks guys :) over a year clean now (and counting!)

Highly Recommend, Though Be Aware You Understand the Type of Tool That It Is
Copied and pasted from an email I sent to the team/developers: To whom it may concern, I just wanted to thank you for this stellar tool. I have used it for years, I found it in high school (I forget how) and though I never self harm or feel the urge to self harm anymore, I still use it for when I am feeling heightened anxiety or just for a casual guided breathing exercise. My relationship with the app has changed, but never has it been poor. Done both very thoughtfully and simply. Thank you. Tools like this matter, and the groups/organizations/people that make them happen matter. Sent fro

I love this
I’ve been depressed for a very long time now. It’s only now I’ve started to “🔪”. This year has been very hard on me so I was looking for some stress relief app when I found this. I didn’t have high hopes since most apps I tried didn’t really help me. But the activities on here really calm down my urge to cut. I would recommend!

diversity
i enjoy this app, however i think the term “gypsy” is sometimes offensive to certain people and shouldn’t be used at the beginning of the questionnaire. also i saw no indigenous option, as well as some other identities and cultures not shown. since culture and race can be a big source of some mental health issues and trauma, i believe there should be more options. i would also like to know the relevance of what this app uses from this information/data.

Amazing app! (and suggestions)
I just wanna say I love this app, it’s helping me break my bad habit. It reminds me of all the positives in a moment of negativity and it’s so genius that it forces you to refocus to something positive, and gets your mind off the bad stuff. It also rewards you with streaks with little badges! And it gives helpful resources for things the app cannot do. I do have a suggestion though. When activities start where you have to use your phone, for example texting a friend, the timer never works out of the app for me. I’ll go to my messages app while the timer is at 4:45 or so, and when I get back 5

So many uses
While I originally downloaded this app for its intended purpose many years back, I now use it more for anxiety and OCD than self harm. It’s particularly helpful for OCD when I’m struggling to not give into a compulsion. It’s helped me a LOT over the past month in taking positive steps to improve my hoarding problem—calming me down, distracting me, and comforting me when needed. I hope the app makers eventually recognize all the good this could do for other mental health issues and start advertizing it, but in the meantime, I’ll just be telling people myself. :)

something’s wrong
a lot of the pages or activities are off-center and only partially on the screen so you can’t see or do them and sometimes can’t even click out of them, which ironically only exacerbates my thoughts of self-harm.

Right off the bat…
I was curious about this app, and right away there’s this moving animation on the Home Screen that I can’t turn off. I tell you what, that would contribute to my stress if I were trying to get used to where I needed to go. There should be an option to toggle it off, or fade it out after a few repetitions. Right now it drives me bananas that there’s something there to distract me. Update: Thank you for the response. Pretty much anything that moves incessantly is going to be a distraction to someone easily distracted by moving objects… which is selected for among a pool of folks that are likel

Calm Harm Review
After reflecting on the above criteria and my own experience using Calm Harm, I give the app a 4.5 out of 5. Calm Harm is a free, simple, user-friendly app that introduces and encourages young people to practice evidence-based strategies derived from Dialectical Behavior Therapy to “ride the wave” of self-harm urges by choosing an activity within the different categories (Comfort, Distract, Express Yourself and Release). The adolescent experience can often be characterized by risky behavior, which is demonstrated by the fact that teens are more likely to engage in cutting and other forms of se
