Here’s a revised 2-star version: ★★☆☆☆ Grindr has a large user base and it’s possible to meet people, which is about the only reason I’m giving it 2 stars instead of 1. The biggest issue is that Grindr seems far more focused on making money than improving the user experience. Nearly every feature feels designed to push users toward spending more, upgrading, or buying another subscription tier. Hot profiles disappear with Xtra.
There was another comment below, and I completely agree with him. When you’re using the free version of Grindr you’ll see about 50 profiles and in my area about 30 of them or trans bot accounts. Right after the free profiles, you’ll see a banner that says “Xtra” making you think have that tier of a membership you’d be able to see all the profiles below, which are all hot guys with no trans bot accounts at all. So a few days ago I upgraded to Xtra immediately all I saw hundreds of profiles of just men and trans profiles. All of the hot guys that I used to see behind the paid wall of “xtra” were

Greedy and scummy
This app’s quality has gone down the toilet in the past few years, and that’s putting it lightly. The most basic features like seeing everyone who tapped your profile (basically someone liking your profile) or viewing albums that people sent you is now locked behind a paywall. It genuinely makes no sense why these are paywalled because these are things that PEOPLE SENT ME, the greed of this company is sickening. Update at bottom. This app has never been known for its safety but the newer updates dramatically fail in safety. Let’s start with search functions. Trans people are grouped up like we are all the same causing hate coming our way. Then the latest update put the most invasive adds I have ever seen. If I go to try and block someone or just about anything in this app. I am forced to watch an add first. My god it is so astonishing watching what was once a really solid app be destroyed by greed and poor design. Absolutely not a fan of how much they have limited the amount of profiles the user can interact with, and the few profiles available are marred by tons of profiles that are 35-70 miles away. It’s incredibly frustrating to talk to another user thinking he’s in your town and finding out he’s literally in the other side of the county. Not only that, but the community around my area that use Grindr are pretty pushy and sometimes just flat out demanding— but that’s an issue with the users not the app itself. Being a free user, you’re very limited on what you can do and see. You’re only given a small selection of near by profiles to view and message, a lot of which are just blank. Fair enough, I get people not wanting to give away their info or anything identifiable, but with that being the case I, and most likely others too, aren’t going to be the ones to reach out first because we just don’t know who we’re talking to. GARBAGE RACIST APP
This new update has FROZEN “scrolling” through the grid of profiles when you search by city. This is unacceptable and defeats the entire purpose of displaying profile's on a grid. Scrolling however, IS NOT “frozen” when you search in your messages, or look at people on the local grid. Its obvious you FROZE scrolling so people HAVE TO PAY to look at profiles outside their area (or even your own town less than 1 mile away). Its clearly intentional and frankly disgusting. Grindr makes you watch ads BEFORE reporting “spam”. Why should we help you keep the grid clean if you're getting paid to run ads when we report legit SPAM? Too many steps to report SPAM, yet you want us to pay for Premium, and cant even get rid of the fake trans profiles that clog up the feed which pop up in EVERY city. Making unpaid users PAY YOU for helping you keep the feed clean is DISGUSTING and unethical. Also, putting users in our feed from HUNDREDS OF MILES AWAY is ridiculous. Can’t block people
It is 2026 and the option to block someone before messaging them still does not exist. This used to be a standard feature but now it requires someone to message you first. This is ridiculous. Additionally the amount of ads and the cost of the subscription tiers has gone totally off the rails, this company being publicly traded has ruined its usability. While Grindr is arguably one of the most used apps for hookups, it is absurd how many accounts are obviously bots designed for spam. These accounts tend to share the same characteristics and clearly have similar pictures and names (sometimes even exactly the same) to be separate individuals. For Grindr to also be charging such high premiums for XTRA and Unlimited and still not have the capability to effectively detect bot accounts prior, during, or even after creation is alarming.
