Shofar and the Arrival of Shabbat In the times of the Beit HaMikdash, Shabbat was announced publicly. The Gemara (Gemara Shabbat 35b)* describes how the shofar was blown on Friday afternoon: first to call workers in from the fields, then to stop labor in the city, to close shops, and finally to signal the official beginning of Shabbat. These blasts ensured that the entire community entered Shabbat together, prepared and aware — a reminder that Shabbat is not only kept, but welcomed.
