Description

Sharpen your sense of time! liveBPM is the tempo monitoring tool for drummers, bands and DJs. It detects music and beats via the microphone and continuously displays the current tempo in beats per minute (BPM). It is easy to use and delivers high-quality results while being energy efficient. === What users said about liveBPM === John Walden, freelance musician and music technology journalist at musicappblog.com: "There are three obvious applications for the app. First, it would make a brilliant practice tool for a drummer, allowing them to monitor just how good they are at keeping a steady tempo without the aid of a click track to guide them. Second, sat beside your kit during a performance, it would allow you to judge just how well you are hitting the ideal tempo for each song in your set. It’s not just drummers that can benefit for liveBPM as the third use is in mapping the tempo – and any tempo changes – in commercial recordings. While this is useful for drummers, it is instructional for almost any musician." JonLong: "I used this at my last band practice and wasn't expecting it to work. I couldn't believe how quickly and accurately it started tracking the bpm, even despite the very loud volume of our music." PocketDrummer82: "I am a professional drummer and I have been looking for something like this for years! Unless your playing with backing tracks or recording, Playing with a Click is too Mechanical. This app allows the tempo to breathe, and its like a little angel on your shoulder telling you the band is speeding up or slowing down. It is totally worth the money." Chris Walther: "I have used this about five gigs now and have quit using my previous tempo meter. I used both for a few gigs to test the accuracy. Dead on. Thanks! Every drummer should use this." magrec: "This has been very helpful for recording. thanks!" === Detailed Description === This is a tool designed for professional use: - Well-tested beat detection engine guarantees trustworthiness - Can handle most genres - Produces results accurate to within 0.1 BPM under the following conditions: -- The tempo is constant or almost constant -- Strong impulses are defining the beat (drums, accentuated rhythm instruments like bass/guitar, etc.) Further features: - Tempo curve shows the development of tempo over time - Multiple zoom modes to show last 2, 3, 5, 7, 10, 15, 20 or 30 minutes - Advanced audio spectrum analysis via FFT - More accessible and usually more accurate than BPM counters that function through tapping - Low battery drain thanks to high performance code and efficient algorithms Using it as a musician: - Use it as an objective tempo reference like a metronome - It actually has several advantages over a metronome: -- You are not tied to a click, giving you more flexibility -- Helps you use tempo changes to enhance your musical expression -- With blind tests, it can massively improve your timing confidence, which is especially important if you are in a tempo leading role (e.g. drummer) - Discover how/whether your favorite artists use tempo changes - Measure and improve your time-keeping skills - Identify slowdowns and speedups while practicing your instrument - Always be in control of the tempo during your live gigs and rehearsals Controls: - Power Button: For freezing the tempo curve and minimizing battery drain - Clear Button: Clears the tempo curve - Slider: Adjusts the target tempo range (i.e. 80-160 BPM) - Zoom Buttons: Switch between zoom modes for the tempo curve. (2-30 minutes) Note: - You can check and improve the detection by clapping loud to the beat. Also, results can be improved by plugging in a suitable external microphone. - You can support my work by rating it on the App Store. Live BPM
I’m a new user to Live BPM. After working with it for many hours now, I’m happy to say it works easy and seamlessly. The one enhancement I would suggest is: Adding a regular Metronome feature that you can set at the beginning of each song on stage(to begin the song) then display the beginning tempo to the ongoing tempo during the performance. Not sure if you can do this. It would definitely be an enhancement.

But you can never leave …..
A friend brought his to a session, and I found it useful and download my own copy. It works when I run it. But the app switcher on my iPhone 12 Pro (iOS 16.2) doesn’t work within live BPM. It works with all my other applications. The only way I found to exit is to shut down my phone and reboot. Not good. I found no way other than Facebook to contact the creator Daniel Bach. Not so good for those of us that choose not to sell our soul to Meta. Updated: 4/5/23 App developer Daniel Bach offered this help: “the app is closed by swiping in the orthogonal direction, like all apps running in la

Good for what it’s meant for
It does a good job of tracking tempo. However, I wish it would support split screen on the iPad so I can run it side by side with Forscore. It’s a terrible waste of space running in full screen. I will still give it 4 stars because it is successful in reading and accurate bpm when playing live.

Works every time without fail, but maybe runs fast
I’ve been using this at least once a day on average for six months. … very reliable and picks up the beat very fast. However comparing its readings to accepted readings posted by DJ’s online it might be running a couple of BPM fast. Or maybe it’s my turn table.

Great idea, but a couple major flaws
Firstly, praise is due for how well it tracks the beat. Nicely done. The issues are how it forces to a reversed landscape and there's no option to switch it. It really shouldn't require landscape at all and, at the very least, it should be able to flip counter clockwise for that forced landscape view, instead of clockwise. I've encountered no other apps that only work that way. All others follow phone orientation. The other issue is related - closing the app requires swiping from the direction of the forced landscape view.

Good idea but needs further development
As a musician who does a lot of transcribing, this tool saves so much time and has many practical applications. However, the app is missing some features that, in my opinion, are necessary. It measures BPM and plots it on a graph, but there is no way to export or save the results for later analysis. Lastly, the UI really needs some simple improvements, such as buttons

Been using for 4 years
I’ve been using this app for almost 4 years while Playing in a 24 piece big band. I Had a few people inquiring how I keep such a good time after last nights rehearsal. I pointed directly to this app and claimed, not only does it keep me honest, but I have proof when the band doesn’t listen well! Lol ! Seriously, this app has saved a few arguments with the Director!! I have never tested its accuracy to a click. However, it’s very very close. And when the band decides a tempo feels good, this app is gold to help repeat that bpm for the next performance if we wish. I’ve been meaning to write a

Beat Live BPM Detector
Works again! Accurately detects bpm every time. I am a professional DJ and have been using this app for years. Perfect for auditioning tracks and getting quick accurate bpm. Great for live shows. Detect bpm of dj on before you! A quick note. App stopped working with IOS 14 update so I deleted. Tried other apps that all sucked so I installed this one again, authorized app to use microphone and it’s working again!!!! So happy. Hope this helps someone else:)

Detecting a click tract bpm
I use it only to detect the click track count in for the backing tracks I purchase. Some producers publish the tempo but most don’t which makes it unclear visually where sections start and stop. I can have it listen to the count off click audio, set the discovered bpm in Reaper, load a track and see how it lines up many bars down the line. If the tune is played in good time, everything will line up visually and the snap function will be useable. Live bpm worked perfectly for this simple task.

Stop the whining
I say that in the title for both people in your band if your using the app, and some of the complaints I read about people who have purchased the app. I found this app when I was at a local jam session in DC. The house drummer has it on a phone on his bass drum. After on jam I immediately downloaded the app. It was that impressive to me. I rarely pay to purchase apps, but this was a no brainer. Years ago I had a thing called a beat bug. You put a trigger on your snare drum, and you’d get the space between hits as a number on a screen. It kind of worked, but had a lot of shortcomings espec

Doesn’t work with odd time signatures.
I’m a professional musician specializing in traditional folk music from many countries. I downloaded this AP just now and tested it playing my hurdy gurdy. I’m afraid it doesn’t work at all with 3/8 — even with a loud, steady pulse from the dog (the buzzing bridge on the gurdy), though it had no problems with tunes in 2/4 and 4/4. I then played samples of recorded music — Irish, Old Time, etc. It can barely handle 6/8 if there is a loud guitar in the mix, not on solo fiddle or pipes; and it gets totally confused with recordings of Hungarian, Balkan music, etc. Too bad, I had high hopes.

Used to work better?
I have used this app for a couple of years, and in general it works great. More and more frequently though, it gets stuck at 140 BPM, no matter what the actual beat of the song is. If I delete it and re-load it it’s fine, but it’s happening more & more frequently. :-(

Love this App
Drummer here... This is a great $4 “insurance policy” for tempo. The big display (I use an iPad) allows me to look over and see if I’m creeping up or dragging (spoiler: I don’t have perfect tempo). Especially helpful for me on the sower songs but I use it for everything. Again, it is just a nice “double-check” on the tempo.

Drummers need this.
The app can be a bit wonky with odd time signatures, but it otherwise does a fairly amazing job without the need for extra trigger hardware. I have used it to learn how my emotions impact my tendencies to speed up or slow down. I also use it to show bandmates where their perception of time is off (“No, in fact we did not speed up. We were +/- 1 bpm the entire time. Have a look at the data.”)

Decent, not very fast though
This seems like a decent tool for recording speed at lower tempos. However it only seems to effectively measure tempo ranges below roughly 200 bpm. I personally bought this to measure drum roll speed, but sub 200 bpm is way to slow to for any reasonable roll. So for what it can do it’s a fine app, just don’t expect to measure a 800 bpm roll on this with any real accuracy.

Stop the bpm questioning
Not so many musicians have a perfect feel for tempo. “We” as base players and drummers are the guides. This app is a must have and it closes out the complaints from singers and other not perfect timers. I (the drummer) set the tempo for the band. Without the app I was not able to SHOW the factual tempo and that is where it gets annoying sometimes. Now the tempo played is not a “feeling” anymore but a fact. Made my live easier. And I can see when I screw up before anybody else 😉. And yes sometimes the singer of solo players want some freedoms, that’s fine too! We than can show them how much fr

Only 4/4 time...
I absolutely love this app and would recommend it to any and all musicians!!! Sometimes I feel it’s more useful than a click track to be able to watch your tempo and adjust on the fly. It’s not a messy or difficult process like a click track can be. For me it was as simple as getting a phone mount and finding a spot for it on my drum kit. I use this app multiple times a week and I can say it’s well worth the money! Now to answer a few of the questions I had about this app.... It can detect a beat from any instrument, clapping, or pretty much any noise. It has about a 1-3 second delay on re

Awesome app
I downloaded this app a few days ago and have been playing with it ever since. If there was some way to calculate the average tempo over what it recorded and displayed the lowest BPM/highest BPM over that period would be great. These numbers could be used for all sorts measurements making it easier to see improvement over time.

Can’t close app on iPhone X modified review
Previously I stated you could not close the app on an iPhone X however as the developer pointed out if you do turn the phone sideways you can close it by swiping up. Thank you so much for the response this alleviated a very frustrating problem for this app.

Thanks for Update
Daniel, thanks for the update. With the last updates from Apple, I thought it might have killed your app. This is such a handy app. It's like having a speed radar gun for your band. Much handier than a click track as you get a feel for the speed of the whole band. I just attach my phone to my kit with a simple mount and I always know where we are on timing. I'm surprised this app isn't used by every band. Look forward to 2.0!!!!
