Hands down best dictionary app
Not only is it the best dictionary app on my phone, it’s probably the best designed app I’ve ever used. It’s been on my phone for more than a decade so I don’t recall if I coughed up money for the ad-free version or not but if I did, it was a one-time affair and a good use of money. There’s no in-app purchases offered. It’s useful, and unexpectedly, entertaining. It doesn’t get in the way of my workflow with distracting notifications. That may be my personal settings but turning off or limiting notifications on other apps often doesn’t work or reduces the functionality of the app. I could go o

An Honest Offline Dictionary
I am returning to this review to give the app top marks. It is a very good reference and works fine with no internet connection. It's the best dictionary app I have found. Thank you Merriam-Webster. A few minutes ago I down-rated this dictionary, because it lacked a word I sought. Then I went back to the app store, looking again for a more comprehensive offline dictionary. I chose one that actually had "Offline" in its title. What lie. It was actually a vehicle for subscription services, and would not even let me look up a word without accepting a free trial. Weak definitions
I really messed up purchasing this. Merriam-Webster is pretty surface level compared to the OED. But beyond the shallow definitions, the app doesn’t seem formatted for the larger iPhones and the UI is surprisingly sparse (not in a good way). Also, there’s no search history or an ability to download anything. These are basic features I’ve seen in nearly every other dictionary app. I feel like a sucker having paid $10 for this. Sigh.

Just Says Error Now. Please Fix
I cannot search anything in this dictionary anymore. Every time I enter any word into the search field, I simply get the message “Error.” I’m putting in established and accepted words. Very odd. I’m using this application on an iPhone 13 Pro Max if that helps to diagnose the issue at all for the developer. I hope the developer will please look into this problem with the program and please release an update that hopefully fixes the issue. Thank you if so, thank you for the hard work and time no doubt put into this app and God bless.

The app is great and easy to use. I also enjoy the different types of vocab games that come with the app. One recommendation would be to unable the user to change the text sizes (and preferably the margins as well). Some of the texts are too big or lines are too spaced out which make it hard to capture in one look.

Okay in a quiet area
Trying to use app when at work to try And find out how to spell something by saying the word using the microphone feature in noisy area or even in mild noisy area microphone can not pick up what I am saying. I can use normal txt feature using microphone iPhone picks up just fine. Same microphone on the phone. App needs little better microphone software added to it.

Hard to part with paper
There is something about having a book and flipping through the pages and discovering (getting distracted by) other words along the way to the word you are looking up. As much as I enjoy the above process, having the access to the entire dictionary carrying 7 ounces instead of 2 pounds is a trade off that is hard to turn down. Fellow word lovers enjoy the instantaneousness of this app AND indulge in the ocean that the paper version offers you.

When I was a child, my father — a university law professor and a remarkably knowledgeable man — kept a huge dictionary on the coffee table as the centerpiece of our living room. Good but could have more features
You can’t view a list words without looking them up first. I wish I could view words the way you could in a physical dictionary. The search function only works if you spell the word correctly so it can be hard to find a word you can’t quite spell exactly. It does have a thesaurus feature which is nice. And it has weekly word games included. Overall worth a purchase if you use a dictionary often while traveling.

Absolutely love this app! I use it all the time. I especially love the pronunciation of words since I grew up without phonics. Used to be great, now the app doesn’t even work
March 2023: Paid for this upgraded version of the app, used it for years. Now in recent months, after an “update” or whatever “bug fixes and other tweaks” as they call it…the app doesn’t even work anymore. Constantly freezes as soon as I open it. Frustrating! Pretty disappointed Update June 2024: Seemed to be great, now I’ve rethought it. Sorry but this app is trash. Paid $10 for this “upgraded, no-ad” version of the original app, used it for a while with no problem. As of 2023 the app completely stopped working. It’s now 15 months later and it still freezes every time as soon as I open it. D

This is app is always good to have in the back pocket. I love that fact that there is no monthly/annual subscription. The UI is easy to navigate and familiar. The only thing I wish this app had more of, is a more thorough section explaining the etymology of the words. What is does provide is sufficient, I would say, but there is definitely some room for improvement. Overall, an excellent tool to have!

Great Dictionary App
I really enjoy using the app on my devices. It provides definitions, pronunciations, and origins of each word in addition to synonyms and antonyms for most. I use it all the time when I read a book or look for a better word when I am writing a memo. It also have word games in addition to word of the day to improve vocabulary which’s very convenient for me since English is my second language.
