Google Translate App is way better than Apple Translate app.
I’ve used the Apple translate app that came preinstalled on my iPhone 16 Pro Max when I got the Phone back in October of 2024 and up until recently there have been a lot of like bugs and glitches in the “Apple Translate app” the reason I like The Google Translate app is because Google Translate offers more languages that you can translate anything you want to than the “Apple Translate app” Google Translate app is by far a better app than Apple Translate. Fix the Japanese translations, and add Irish Gaelic pronunciation!!
I think the handwriting search for Japanese translation in Google Translate is second-to-none, because it uses shape recognition incredibly well. But the sound pronunciations of the Japanese characters almost always differ from their transliteration into Latin alphabet below the text! Kanji are characters that typically have at least 2 different pronunciations depending on how they are used. It would be very helpful to add a “preferred bilingual translation mode”. Translation from a still image of printed text is an abysmal failure. The app attempts to fit translated text over source text in multiple fonts sizes when the source text is a single size. In the process, there is overlapping or lost text. The old interface which allowed selected source text to be translated was much better and at least functional. It still doesn’t allow pasting a photograph. Importing a photograph is an afterthought rather than a standard feature. Something to add
I like the app, but I would also like some things. I’m not sure if this was already a thing before or not, but I’d like it if the app can have different versions of French also. When I went to the settings to see if I can change it, I only saw some certain languages and not French. French from Quebec and Belgium are different from French from France, and then there are many countries that speak French and not those 3, so it would be great if that system was also added.

I like the app, very simple and easy to use, but there is one problem. I think you, when listing all the available languages, list them in their language then put the English version (or whatever the user’s main language is) next to it. For example: English (main) Español (Spanish) Deutsch (German) I think that it would be easier on anyone who accidentally set the wrong language as their main language and/or prefers the name of it in that language.

I have used google translate for many years. Early on mostly on my computer but now we all use our phones more. I love the history feature but it would be so helpful if I could download my history to practice in other ways. If I could sort the history in alphabetical order then I could find terms unused before more easily. Formerly Great now useless
The latest update crashed my app. There is nowhere to report this to the developer. I removed the app and re-installed it. Even worse. This used to be my go to translator app (as all other expats I know in Central America). This used to be my go-to translator, but lately English to Spanish translation is dramatically different from what I wrote. It’s as if the app is acting as a mediocre interpreter instead of an accurate translation tool. It’s gotten to the point where I often have to redo my efforts in other app. I think the team should either allow users to determine if we want strict, genuine translation or we want to provide stylist latitude (which you’re taking without asking users). The app has gone off the deep end in terms of taking way too much latitude.

I’m studying a 2nd language and I use this app every day—many times a day. It’s great, but it can also be detrimental to learning. Sometimes you just want to know if a sentence or phrase makes sense and is grammatically correct. The translation toggle will make corrections, but it will also change the sentence, the verb, the word order, and even the meaning. If you’re working with a verb, it always changes the verb to something more appropriate—according to the translator. For new learners this can be really defeating and frustrating. Great app with one flaw
The app been really useful over the years as an immigrant, but one thing has frustrated me for a long time. When you go into the photo translate mode, there are no arrows that would just switch two languages around like it’s done in the text translation page. Update: several years later and still NONE of these issues have been resolved. Overall, the app is quite good. However, there is still lots of room for improvement. 1) Offline translate, isn’t. Download and install French and it still requires internet access to translate even common words. 2) Real-time translate is absolutely useless. Used to be the best translation app. Now it’s awful. Apples translate app has gotten miles better than googles. It all started about 6-7 months ago. I started to notice tbe words where wrong for what I wanted to say. I speak Spanish but I’m not completely fluent so sometimes I use an app to help me. Better before the update now it’s barely usable…
I live abroad and my Spanish is not perfect, but it gets better every day, but I’ve relied on the Google translation tool to be able to live here without issues and to make my life easier unfortunately with this last update it doesn’t seem to understand who’s talking and it’s not as easy to use is try to automatic things and the other version was less automated but worked. I’d rather have the old version, but I cannot because I have an iPhone. This new version will only translate one person before I have to exit and then it asks for a confirmation of the exit. Romanized Typing for Japanese is Buggy
The last update seems to have made typing Japanese in Romanization buggy. When you start typing, there’s a funky latency that causes major Japanese character typing errors. For example, when you start typing the letters of a syllable, it starts normally but the vowel doesn’t come out quick enough and becomes another character without finishing the previous syllable. It might look something like this: tえん instead of てん. I hope you are able to correct this. Typing in English is fine.

Recent update seems to break the transcribe feature Which we use very often. My children rely on it for their classes. Overall this app has had general improvement over the years. Some functionality has started out rocky but later gets refined. I wish it had better recognition of regional accents in order to help make translation more accurate. The app really struggles with homonyms / homophones, but regional accents really throw this app off.

It’s very hard to use rapidly and efficiently. The app goes through different states that shows or hides buttons senselessly (no input yet, keyboard is open, listen through voice, input was made through voice, user had typed something, etc). For example, when saying something via voice, the button to “flip” the languages gets hidden. History button only shows up when the text box is empty. Speaking to the mic also times out super quick. This is a great app, except for the fact that at the moment it detects nobody talking, it immediately shuts off the microphone. It doesn’t even allow for somebody to take a breath between sentences before shutting off. It is so annoying to have to continually watch and make sure that the mic is on while you’re having a conversation. There’s no need for it to shut off so quickly. If I push the button to record, I want it to record until I shut it off. The app doesn’t need to try to be smart and guess when it should turn it off. I will tell it to turn off when I’m ready to turn it off!

I’ve used Google Translate for years. Both in my work and personal life. It isnt always the most accurate. In many languages it steamrolls right over idioms and even proper names. But I can accept that as an inherent shortcoming of non human translation. In recent months the app has become unusable in microphone mode. It will time out while the person is still speaking. Silly app missing obvious features
With every update they break something else or remove something obvious. The latest update is no better. Currently, if you use DETECT LANGAUGE to find the translation of something, it may translate it fine but it won’t tell you what the detected language is anywhere on-screen. i.e translate l'immensite and it will tell you “the immensity” but in what language is that?? Seriously Google stop hiring interns and offshore to do the work! Updated several months later and still an issue. This app used to tell you what language it was detecting and no longer does!
