This app is no longer free

I’ve been using Avenza for years, mostly during the summer and would import custom maps of places I’d hike, hadn’t reached the 20 map limit, to ensure I don’t get lost. Now, not only do I have to pay to import any amount of maps, but the placed the one I already had in the system as inactive. I used to recommend to everyone but I can’t in good conscience tell others to use an app that cost $35. Just extremely disappointed

Expensive yearly price tag

I've had this app for about 9 years now and it had a free use section. It's a very good mapping tool but when I updated it, it said the maps I was using were no longer supported in the free mode. In order to use the maps I now have to buy into the subscription which is $34 a year. That's too expensive for me and how often I use the mapping. As a paramedic running calls "in the field" I need a good map program. But I'm not going to pay that much for only using it a few times a year. It was good while it lasted. Good bye

The app is excellent didn’t know what to expect. Riding a gravel bike I was able to follow myself on the map in real time and know I was on the correct road. GPS function I did not realize the iPhone even had, no cell phone for calls, oh well, but I knew where I was. 61 mile ride, no wrong turns.

No more custom maps

My complaint isn’t about the product (though features could be improved). Just a month ago I could import up to three custom maps. Tried today and that free feature is gone. I’ll be deleting the app. If the company would like a suggestion on how to improve their product, allow for editing of polygon/polyline vertices.

Huge changes to access overnight. Too big of changes. Meet consumers in the middle!

I’ve loved this app for years. Use it on prescribed burns, during wildfire suppression, out in the field. Making it so free users can’t even import one custom map or drop a single point on basemaps will make this app useless for me. Really sad for this outcome and while I can understand a change was needed, I wish you could find a better middle ground for users.

Absolutely not

You can do more with other services for a lot less money than they currently want. They went from having free limited access to locking down all the maps I previously uploaded as inactive. I was forced to pay what I thought was an annual free while lost in the field just to see my own maps and some of my data had been lost (points I created) only to receive an alert that I only paid for a month. Find another service. This was only okay when it was free. Certainly not good enough for the price they want.

Off-line mapping pro premium plus, now with more payment options.

I’ve had this app for at least five years now, as a reliable off-line map for the local area or downloading a portion for hikes and adventures. I loved that it was no nonsense, three free offline maps which was enough for me. Now the maps that I would help fellow hikers or bikers with have been blocked by yet another paywall. If the maps I rely on can be screwed over by changing the payment method I have no reason to trust the app. Please revert the offline system or expect to drift away like a fart on the wind.

I’ve used Avenza for years and years. I’ve purchased maps through their store. One of the best features was also being able to import gpx files to overlay on the basemap for times when paid maps were not available. Moving to the new subscription model removed this ability from the average user. I’m not paying a subscription and regret that my maps I’ve purchased are now held hostage on this platform.

What a Backpacking Map App Should Be

Just as the title says, this is the app that you will actually use as a backpacker. Flashy tracking, metrics, and user submitted images are definitely cool elements of some other apps, but if you actually want to navigate, downloading a full map and being able to zoom in on every little detail is really what you need. This offers that without any of the buggy fluff that you really don’t.

The app has taken away the free access to add custom maps. This is going to kill the small guys using this platform. The small guys making maps that get imported for free isn’t really free. These small map makers are paying money to Avenza’s parent company for the software to do so. They are making their money off of map makers that can no longer push their maps to their customers. Update reduces functionality again…

I’ve been using this app for years, upgraded to Plus as I needed to store more maps. Everyone I work and adventure with has a Plus account at this point. After the most recent update a Pro account is now required to share maps, which was an unpleasant surprise after several years of sending maps back and forth at job sites, trailheads, etc. usually in spotty cell reception. After all the aggravating cute little updates over the years, I can’t decide if this is the final straw or not.

Fort McCoy

I hunt the fort McCoy army base and it is very large with no street signs and very easy to get lost especially in the dark. I did get lost one time when hunting with my brother and I had no idea where I was or which way to go and my brother was very angry with me and this did not help our situation. Good for offline

Works great for offline maps. You can download up to date PDF maps directly from USFS and Avenza will import them from the file without any configuration. However, I wish there was a way to specify map limits (shrink) due to the white margin. Avenza will switch to another map automatically if you cross the border however there is a large white margin for many from USFS. Also the ability to specify a region to keep on screen for the legend. And a way to tell it what zoom level to switch to which map at. The hysteresis is too large for zoom so you need to zoom WAY out to get it to switch then W

I love this app and it has been so great to download what you need and have it whenever wherever regardless of cell signal. When Off-roading or hiking I love this app! I also love the new UI it is so much nice and easier to use! Biggest complaint, and this is from all those I know who use this too, is the lack of CarPlay/AndroidAuto. Air drop issues

With the newest update, dropping pins has gotten a lot more annoying. Yes, it was a pain if you accidentally dropped a pin and needed to delete it, but it’s way worse now that you have to hit the little save button every single time. Also with the newest update, if you click on a tracked line and pull up to see the data, it tells you two different distances. Like this one- I click it, it says 1.84 miles. I pull up the screen to see data and it says 2.28 miles. I scroll down to the Show Graph section, and it says 1.84 miles. What is the real distance? There’s no explanation. When drawing li

The update is a downgrade

The app used to be near perfect but the new update has made it 3x more steps to collect a data point. I contacted support to see if there were options to make it more streamlined like it used to be but there is not and they also said there are no plans to go back to how it was. As someone who collects hundreds and hundreds of data points per week, I will be searching for an alternative to Avenza.

New issues

I have been using this app for years and loved it. The new update has introduced so many bugs and glitches that the app is almost unusable now. Every time I try to name a place mark the app automatically erases my work. It doesn’t save when I label things. The buttons are in a position that they get pressed accidentally where they didn’t before and it’s very frustrating.

I use and love Avenza and have been using and loving it for a few years now. However, this most recent update has updated things that did not need changed and now the interface is a crapshoot. The navigation is all sorts of funky, and naming layers is also changed and become a problem. Please Fix these things/return it to the way it used to be please. Especially the navigation. I’m about ready to just use Onx due to how annoying Avenza is now.

It helps me easily communicate to clients in the field how big of an n sized area would be for an opening/harvest area. A buffer track tool would be cool to have. Great features but search results need work

Updating my below review because another annoying feature is that when you sort your maps by distance it isn’t accurate. You’d think that the map that you’re currently on would be first when sorted that way. But it isn’t. In fact, I often have maps that are hundreds of miles from me and in another state showing up before the actual map I’m on. Overall I love this app. When I'm in a park I use it over All Trails. I like that the points of interest you'd find on the paper maps for these places are included. The search though isn't very good. I'll go to the store. Enter a specific State Park.

The mats are everything I expected is more I couldn’t believe how good the mats were. They were so good that we didn’t get lost no matter which way we turned we were spun around on certain places and we figured it out by using the mats.
