I would keep this review at a five star but I seem to be running into issues. The lovely developer has not gotten back to me with the question I asked sometime ago when it came to servers. Why is it that I am not able to see the Spectrum server in Kansas City Missouri since that is my local provider for Internet? Please add signal strength indicators!
It would be super useful (and make this app even better than the big ones) if you could show real-time signal strength (like dBm, bars, RSRP/RSRQ for mobile data, or RSSI for Wi-Fi) right next to the speed results (download/upload/ping). Many times my speed drops not because of the network overall, but due to weak signal in my location – being able to see both speed AND signal strength in one place would help me troubleshoot much faster (e.g., move to a better spot, switch towers, or complain to my provider with proof).

I love this app, and have been using it for as long as I can remember, but really wish they would show more love to be tv app; it’s only function is Speedtest, neglecting all of the other tabs and functions that are available on iPhone and iPad… not even the video test (which is the majority use case for the tv).
Hopefully, the other features/tabs will be added in a future update, besides VPN – which was the initial reason for me writing this review – since I just realized they’re now getting rid of that functionality, and referring customers to a different app.

Caught a guy
As with most older people, my parents were the baby boomers kids. So they weren’t too tech savvy one could say. I’ve always been their IT support. I got my mom on a plan with AT&T that fit what they needed for internet speeds.

First, every update turns disabled cookies back on and I have to disable them again. Stop it. (-1 star)
Next, and most importantly, it is really no good that a few months ago the Easter eggs that have been part of the app for years were removed, along with the bonus wallpapers and app icons and so on that were earned. This app is great on a technical level, but the fun is gone for whatever reason. I have waited for them to put it all back, but it seems like the company won’t be doing it given the number of updates since Ookla was taken away. No good. (-2 stars)

Buyers Beware!!! What is the point of paying to get ad free use of the app and then turn around while using it and ask for feedback repeatedly? It’s ridiculous to ask over and over for multiple feedback questions on various things. Need more than 3 favorites
I have used the Speedtest app and website for years and I am a daily user of down detector. But DD is less useful to me than it once was due to the limitations placed on it since it became part of Speedtest. Those of us that use this as one of our tech support tools didn’t need to lose functionality with the merger. You needed to at least keep what we had previously and preferably make it better. Recent Update decisions
The way the needle now moves has a jittery motion which imo is undesirable. It’s unpleasant and gives the impression there’s an issue with the throughput. Also the way the progress bar now moves (completely flat) reduces information about the speed test. Previously when it showed peaks and valleys of throughput it gave the user a better idea in quality. Additionally please add latency readings for download and upload on the Mac and Apple TV versions of the app.

Not a fan of the new 6.0.0 update design
I’ve been using the Ookla app for the past decade, and I personally think this is one of the worst redesigns they’ve done so far. I’m not a fan of the forced feedback and the new scrolling design. Hopefully they’ll significantly improve it and make it look a lot cleaner than it does right now.
Edit: unfortunately they’ve made it worse by introducing icons that show how good your test is compared to Internet browsing, gaming, video playback, and video chats, and it makes no sense and seems arbitrary. I have tried quite a few different apps that test the speed of the Internet on various Wi-Fi enabled equipment all over the lower 48 and this one is by far the best, in my opinion.
It’s very user-friendly, with an incredibly quick interface, has a crisp, clean visual appealing appearance (that is easy to read and understand), it doesn’t try to make me buy or watch an ad for 501 different things (that I neither need nor want, and that have nothing to do with the speed of my Internet) before it will give me the info I want, and it works; every time I've needed it, without fail, it just works.

It’s great to compare what you purchase to what you are actually seeing, especially if you are running consoles, and further seeing how your services are going, but when it comes to problems in the services like downage, you’ll be able to confirm it’s down, but with the new consolidation of companies, without internet… you can’t see what areas are down with “Downdetector” before the merge or maps. I can see how good I’m going with the scale but when it goes down… what can I be shown besides I need internet to see what is up… even just running cell service I can’t see how bad the downage is…or

Wish Downdetector was not merging
When I was checking the Downdetector app earlier I was greeted by a message letting me know that it was shutting down because it was merging in with speed test (this app) so I downloaded this and then tried to start adding my favorite services to my favorites in the Downdetector menu, at which point I was told that to add favorites I must make an account so I thought “ok a bit of a pain but I guess I can do that” so I made an account and tried again only to find out that there is a limit of 3 favorites you can keep at once?!?!? Useful, but room for improvement
I like this app to keep my ISP honest and check for trouble with my internet connection and beyond.
What I would like to see is a longer test. A less than one minute test won’t give me a clear picture of the stability of my connection. The video test is a step in the right direction, but I’d like to see the option for a longer or repetitive test.
As for Downdetector, it’s nice that it’s included in this app, but I would really like to have more than three favorites.

With the shutdown of DownDetector’s dedicated app, comes new paywalled opportunities!
I love that I can only add 3 DownDetector favourite sites… even better yet, the DownDetector app is getting shut down. I am sure I’ll have to pay to have any form of DownDetector favourites beyond the 3 I am oh-so-graciously provided out of the good heart of the developers of the SpeedTest app. Additionally, no provider/site logos and increased difficulty in finding sites now using DownDetector built into the SpeedTest app. Yeah, no thanks… uninstalled. I’ll just use a different site for my networks speed tests thanks… and once DownDetector’s app is fully shut down I’ll uninstall it too.

Perfect fit
I love and needed this Speedtest app I have several WiFi connections that I have different things connected to from outside to inside so having a stable fast connection gives me confidence so the Speedtest app has given me access to check those connections daily as much as I need to also they have a great VPN available with the app. I’m not to tech savvy but I do know enough about the harm that’s out there on the internet I have clean browsing history and keeping it that way is important. Just Use It To Keep Your ISP Honest
I take the results with a grain of salt for embellishment, however from every time I run the test and or have connection issues it’s been pretty accurate and very informative as far as preparing me to speak with my ISP about why speeds aren’t what they claimed. Happy Overall with the app. Only 4/5 because of the giant ad boxes that only seem tonoop up right as you are about to click something else and they make sure to be right where you WOULD have been about to tap.

For about a couple of months the app and co-companion Down detector have been extremely difficult to reach to confirm the status of the network resources. Your question why the large difference download to upload speed. I am almost 70 and I’ve been messing around with computers networking for quite a few years. I believe they want to discourage people from sharing files or trading files without paying extra for it. There’s a name for that type of action and I forget right now.

I have been using Speedtest since it first came out and I would not consider using anything else as my primary testing app. It is always one of the first apps I lock at the bottom of the screen right next to settings.… I mean, what else do you need?

In the need for speed, This Application wins the race. It is an app! I believe it’s correct and Spectrum is faster than anything. I get way more than 500 on download, better than 20 on upload speeds. The app shows coverage of different providers which I really like and Video speeds to 4k you can if you want get a VPN pretty cheap if you’re in the market, Don’t know how well it works but it should be a sweet as the app. Love it.
