Description

Learn Japanese Kanji and Vocabulary using WaniKani's Spaced Repetition System. This is a native iOS app. * It's super-fast. All the mnemonics are pre-loaded on your device so there's no waiting. * Do reviews and lessons offline. Your progress will be sync'd when you're online again. * Graph showing your upcoming reviews. * Graphs showing your progress on current level radicals, kanji and vocabulary. * Options to ignore typos and add synonyms during reviews. * Options to sort reviews by SRS level and Wanikani level.

Great app but vacation mode does not work
I loved the old Wanikani app, so when they discontinued it and went to a third-party developer that makes Tsurukume, I switched over to it. It was fine until I needed a break and turned on vacation mode. This is supposed to pause everything and stop having new lessons and reviews pile up while you’re taking a break from the app. Instead, I came back to find 280 lessons and 1721 reviews that I had to deal with. On the Wanikani website, it showed 5 lessons and 120 reviews. I guess I will have to use the website instead. Do not download this app until they make it work properly

Better than using the site, but a couple of nitpicks
I like anki mode and back to back reviews, both of which require scripts that are constantly at risk of breaking on the main site. Frankly if I had to manually type 100 reviews a day, I’d quit. Don’t have the time or patience for that. Two small nitpicks I have though, is I wish you could hide the accuracy percentage during reviews, and disable the review summary once done. Both are distracting and make bad days feel worse by emphasizing my failures. I don’t know if the dev even reads these, but these two small features would make the app perfect for me. Thanks for the hard work.

Good, but I have a suggestion
Really like Wani kani, kanji is lovely. App is smooth, and only crashes if I leave it open in the background for hours. My one and only complaint is I wish kunyomi and onyomi readings were differentiated, or it let me know which was which. On the browser version of Wani kani, this is so. It’s the only downgrade from the OG to Tsurukame.

Flickering Screen
During vocab review, the purple background flickers between a slightly warm shade of purple and a cooler shade of purple. Not sure what's happening. It's not consistent, it maybe happens half the time, but once it gets going it usually doesn't stop. I'm using dark mode, and it's likely not based on my specific device because I've tried two different phones and the same thing happens. Might only be triggered after a certain amount of time, since I only noticed it now that I had a big stack of 70+ reviews. Very distracting. Otherwise love the app, and the ability to use Wanikani on mobile witho

Love this app! Fast and efficient. The fact that I can put it in Anki mode allows me to spend lest time while reviewing the same amount of cards. I just came across an error though. And would love to see it fixed. 白旗 is showing pronunciation as しろはた　but the sound file only plays はっき. I crossed checked with WaniKani and their sound file is the first.

I love that this app exists. It’s even better than the website in so many ways. The one thing that would make it better would be adding some different font options other than hand writing. Sometimes I have a hard time recognizing stylized fonts and I’d like practice with that.

I just started WaniKani and I’m glad there’s a third party app that connects to it. I use my phone instead of desktop and th app is just a bit nicer layout. I also like having the review notifications on I did encounter an issue where it wouldn’t accept じん as a reading for 人, and unfortunately couldn’t figure out where or how to report that other than here

If you select "answer is incorrect" it shows the same card right afterwards. Then at the end it says "10/10" implying there were no mistakes? To me this seems to break anki mode from being meaningful

Essential for Wanikani on iPhone
Wanikani itself is great and this app provides the convenience of doing your reviews anywhere/time instead of being tied to a desktop (doing reviews on Safari is painful on the iPhone). There are a lot of desktop user scripts, but Tsurukame gives you the best of them without having to fiddle around with that. Scripts are not updated/maintained, browser updates break them. This app makes it easy so you don’t have to think about any of that. My only feature request is that I wish Tsurukame would follow the interleaving/lesson limit/ordering that native Wanikani does. I expressed my frustration to the support team due to the lack of an undo button in case a typo was added. They responded to the email with why it isn’t included (illusion of knowledge) and how there are other systems in place for typos that aren’t advertised. My one gripe with this app is some of the mnemonics are really long or abstract. Pronunciation mnemonics are typically 2+ sentences, in which the pronunciation is only in one of them. Great! Just a small problem…
I’m half Japanese and Japanese is my native language so I’m a bit skeptical about apps like this. I bought this app thinking “Oh, it probably won’t help me learn more kanji.” It was actually VERY helpful to have, especially because I could use it offline. The only problem is, one day I logged in and all my progress was GONE!!! I freaked out a bit, but it’s okay. This is probably a small bug, but it would be very helpful if you could fix it! Thank you! (And don’t let this bug stop you from downloading the app! It really is great and helpful!)

Missing features - bugs
I love this app, but it’s missing a big part of the information about each vocab item: common combinations. They really need to add it in. Also there are a lot of bugs. Most of them are small, but some cause problems. Like being unable to read the translations for context sentences or not all the kanji that include a radical being shown in the radical’s page. Really helpful app though. Get notified immediately when you have reviews, even when you don’t have internet. And you can still do them when you don’t have internet. Useful on flights.

I use this fairly regularly and really like the simplification and the ease of usage. Especially the modifiable lenience if you're prone to typos like me. I don't tend to use Wanikani on my pc anymore, this app is just that convenient and better to use. It seems like recently the context sentence translations stopped being blurred by default and just show up as is? Is it possible to regain the blur or have this option be something toggle-ble? This app has made using WaniKani a joy for me. As someone who didn’t like using the website especially when I was on my phone and this app made it possible for me to use anytime. I only wish it gave me the option to review randomly. Like an option that just loaded ten random kanji you already learned and practice and refresh. The way it is now is fine but it’s much harder to review the previous ones I learned to see whether I still know them. Please add a feature like this that’s separate from the level up reviews. WaniKani is amazing, and this app makes it so convenient to do lessons and reviews on the phone. When I have spare time during the day it’s easy to open the app and chip away at my review queue. Amazing but needs “Extra Study: Burned Items”
Tsurukame is an amazing app and has been very helpful to me. I especially love the search feature which allows me to find any kanji I’m thinking of instantly. The only caveat is that the app really should include the “Extra Study: Burned Items” feature that is provided on the main WaniKani website. After a long period of time I begin to forget the burned items and I would find it extremely helpful to be able to practice them through the Tsurukame app.

I use this app primary for reviews. I like how I can add a synonym during reviews if it’s appropriate or mark it as “actually correct” when my big thumbs mash too many typos on the phone keyboard. However I don’t use it for lessons. I like how it blurs out example sentences, but it’s missing the common usage section of the lesson which I like to review. Also, you can’t look at any kanji or vocabulary from levels other than those your are currently studying. I’ve been using it for a month and I’ve been caught up on reviews for pretty much every waking hour since I got the app. The main thing that helps is the unread badge on the app icon. I used to be scared to open WaniKani from fear of the amount of reviews that would build up every day.
