Description
Warblr is an app that automatically recognises birds by their song. The way in which it works is simple – make a recording with your iPhone, and Warblr will identify the species of bird/s that can be found in that recording, providing you with images and descriptions to help you learn more about our feathered friends.
In using Warblr, you will be contributing to a citizen science project, and hopefully one day helping to protect endangered species. We will be making the recordings and the data collected on species identification freely available to be used for research and conservation.
Warblr can recognise over 220 species of British bird, and works particularly well for garden and woodland species. Our technology uses the latest techniques in machine learning, and is supported by Queen Mary University of London.

We've added new functionality that allows you to re-visit your recent recordings. You can store up to seven recordings so that if you're using Warblr without an internet connection you can resubmit what you've captured for identification once you're back online. You can now also listen to a sample song for a number of species and tap to find out more. What has happened?
I used to love Warblr; it was amazing! However, I've noticed some serious changes lately that has rendered it ineffective for me as a premium user. I'm hoping they can resolve these issues soon because I still believe in its potential. I’d recommend waiting until they sort things out before purchasing.

Next to useless
If you want to identify bird sounds then you’re far better off using geographical information and a process of elimination to create a shortlist and then listen to recording samples until you get the result. That’s how I did it.
I used this app and got a selection of five possible birds, all of which were way off the mark. What a complete waste of money. It simply doesn’t do what it says on the tin.

Complete waste of money

Quick and effective
Some reviews from a few years ago suggest this might not work but I gave it a go regardless and was pleasantly surprised to see the issues are resolved
I got a very quick and accurate identification of some local starlings nesting in nearby trees — can’t wait to use it more to identify birds while out and about.
Design is a tad outdated which is the only reason for 4 stars rather than 5. Works great though

Doesn’t Work
Sadly it just doesn’t work. You can record silence indoors and it’ll tell you it’s 45% sure it heard a chaffinch. Therefore there’s little reason to trust it when you do record real birdsong, which has also produced very wrong results for me.

Not fit for purpose
I purchased this app in Jan 2020. From the start I kept getting the message ‘ You have no internet connection’ which was untrue. After 6 months I asked Warblr about it and they said it was a problem with their server which they are endeavouring to correct. One year on and the app still does not function for me. Save your money and use Birdnet, which is free and has an impressive bird-identification success rate.

This app is a complete waste of time! What is the point of having an app that records birdsong but won’t let you listen back and identify what it is because you’re not connected to the internet? Well I am! 4g to be precise! Then again I doubt it would make any difference anyway, because no matter what bird I record the same ones come up every time, clearly not the one I’ve recorded! Wish I hadn’t bothered
This app is so disappointing. Every time I use it, I get a list of birds with “possible” matches. It’s very likely to have been a robin, starling or thrush but none of those even come up!!! Then I have to pick which random one I think it’s likely to be. If I knew which bird it was, I wouldn’t have bought this app!!! If has been an app that I could have tried first, I wouldn’t have bought it.

My partner has a bird song identification app: it identifies all the birds singing and lists them. I bought this app thinking it might be even better. No. It is awful- a complete waste of money. Every time I recorded, my result was topped by blackbird, followed by five birds that I guarantee are not present on a farm in Wales. Furthermore, even I could tell that the bird songs I recorded were totally different and could not ALL be blackbirds.

I’ve wasted £4.99
Having recently bought Warblr I can no longer use it as it is stuck on bird details, which there is no way back from. Having identified a list of possible birds on the screen I tapped one to find out more about it. The details were very interesting but there is no way back, no arrow, no “ back” symbol, and I can’t now resume use of the App. It is extremely frustrating, tapping, double tapping has no effect. I tried coming out of the App but when I tried it again... back to the bird details it is stuck on. A total waste of money.

Great concept
This app is a great idea - shazam for bird calls - and will surely improve as the training data builds up. Currently a bit prone to saying things are chaffinches :-) but even in it’s current less-than-100%-reliable state it is already useful as it gives a list of guesses with %. I’ll try to report if I can see the bird, and I’m sure that will improve the consistency of results over time.

You always needed a good, strong and clear birdsong for this app to accurately identify a bird, but now it’s useless because it just says there’s no internet connection when there clearly is a good one. So Disappointing (but see added update below)
I really wanted this app to work, but sadly I am one of the many it seems who merely gets a message repeatedly saying I have no internet connection, which is not correct. I waited a while to write this review because I had sent an email to the developers asking for help but, two weeks later, I have yet to receive a reply, so I’m not only disappointed that the app doesn’t work for me, but also disappointed with the developer’s customer service.

I’ve previously written a bad review, however...
I received an email from the Warblr team this morning citing server issues for the poor past performance. I’ve just tried the app and it appears to be fixed. Having given it a few goes, it seems accurate too, and even picked up a greater spotted woodpecker that I couldn’t actually hear, but occasionally visits our garden so we know it’s local. Thanks for the comm, team and I’m glad the issues are resolved.
