What’s New Version 1.8.1

Maramataka (Māori lunar calendar - Aotearoa/NZ locations only): - New lunar-noon marker on the dial - the Moon's upper culmination (the Solunar "major" bite period), drawn in its current moon phase, powered by a new fully-offline lunar astronomy engine based on truncated Meeus lunar theory (no I hadn't heard of that either until researching how to do it). Hidden on the rare day with no transit. - New "Interest" setting (Off / Trapping / Fishing / Hunting, when Maramataka is enabled) that tailors each night's guidance to what you're doing. Setting it to 'Off' shows the traditional reading (night character, fishing, planting). This is pretty much a full rewrite of the Maramataka guidance. - Per-night outlook for hunting and fishing + "Solunar bite times" now appear inside the selected night's row in the info panel (where it already auto-scrolls). Bite times list the majors (lunar noon/midnight) and minors (moonrise/set) within the dawn-to-dawn night. Guidance is shown when contributing factors such as temp/wind/rain/moon/season align for the activity. Thanks to Cam Speedy for the idea to include the Solunar theory that many use for hunting and fishing. - Expanded source-cited trapping research and new hunting guidance (Solunar tradition + lunar-noon field observations, clearly hedged). Weather story (on-device summary): - Fixed rain wording that could describe a rainy morning as "dry." Rain facts now read the true chronological forecast at the same sensitivity the rain graphic uses, and are anchored start-to-end (e.g. "rain falling now, continuing until about 13:00 tomorrow afternoon"); reads "showers" for intermittent spells. - Wind and gust peaks are now time-anchored, ending invented phrasing like "gusts to 16 by the afternoon" when the dial shows 30. - Refreshes with the forecast; the summary now updates every time weather data refreshes, instead of roughly once a day, so a pull-to-refresh no longer leaves stale text. Accuracy: - Fixed sunrise/sunset and the day/night band landing up to an hour early in some time zones. Solar times now use each location's real, geocoded time zone and true sunrise/sunset instead of the previous civil dusk/dawn, so the band edges match published times.

Description

Southerly shows your whole weather forecast as one beautiful infographic. Instead of scrolling lists of numbers, you read the shape of the coming weather at a glance: time wraps around a radial dial, temperature colours the outer ring, rain blooms from the centre, and wind fans out as fine spokes. Turn the hand to any moment - the next 12 hours, 24 hours or seven days - and the dial answers the questions that matter: will it get warmer this afternoon? When does the rain arrive? Do I need my umbrella? ONE DIAL, THREE TIMESCALES Switch between a 12-hour, 24-hour or 7-day view. Drag the hand to scrub through time and see the exact temperature, wind and conditions for the moment you pick. THE RADIAL WEATHER • Temperature ring: amber for heat, blue for cold - see the day's warmth at a glance. Dangerous UV is flagged right on the ring. • Rain and snow: a blue bloom swells from the centre where precipitation is coming; even light drizzle shows clearly. • Wind: fine spokes grow with the wind, with gust dots marking the difference between breeze and blast. Choose your unit - Beaufort, m/s, km/h, mph or knots. • Day and night: the rim fades light to dark with real sunrise and sunset. • Haptics: scrub the hand and feel the weather - the wind rise, the tide turn - with a firm tick at each midnight. MANY PLACES, ONE SWIPE Save the locations you care about and swipe between them. Add any city by search, or use your current location. Each place keeps its own real time zone, sunrise and sunset. Weather alerts are displayed beneath the dial. GLOWS IN THE DARK Dark Mode turns the dial into a night instrument: a luminous temperature ring, brighter rain, a shining tide line on a charcoal sky. It matches your device theme on first launch. TIDES, BUILT IN An offline tide predictor; harmonic stations worldwide backed by the FES2022 global tide model that fills in most other coastal locations, all computed entirely on your phone with no tide service and no connection needed. Note this is informational only - never rely on it for navigation or safety. We are actively working to improve the tides model for missing locations. TE AO MĀORI & MARAMATAKA Turn on te reo Māori and Aotearoa comes through: iwi place names, days and conditions in te reo, and the maramataka - the Māori lunar calendar. See tonight's moon phase, the season's whetū, the lunar month (including Ruhanui in a Te Tau Toru Nui o Matariki year), and the Tangaroa nights favoured for hunting and gathering. Maramataka can be focused on hunting, fishing, trapping interests. This is a work-in-progress. A STORY, NOT A SPREADSHEET With Apple Intelligence, Southerly writes a short, plain-language summary of your next 24 hours - on device and offline - including underlying detail not shown on the chart. Note that your device needs to be recent enough to support Apple Intelligence. FOR THE NAVIGATORS Turn on Navigation for live heading, altitude and speed at your current position, plus a true-north marker on the dial. It caches weather data for offline use. YOUR UNITS, YOUR WAY Choose °C or °F, millimetres or inches, and any of five wind scales. PRIVATE BY DESIGN Forecasts come from Apple Weather and place search uses Apple's own maps - no third-party data brokers. Tides and the weather summary are computed on your device. There's no account and no sign-in. NO DATA COLLECTION, NO FORGOTTEN SUBSCRIPTIONS This was built for our own use; we have no use or requirement for your data, nothing is collected. As much is possible is processed on-device including global tide and lunar models, and Aotearoa placenames in Māori. ACTIVELY DEVELOPED This was built for our own purposes, particularly learning te reo Māori and the influence of maramataka on predator trapping here in Aotearoa/New Zealand. It's built for the latest iOS and supported back to iOS 18. We don't doubt there are things to be corrected and fixed, especially relating to maramataka, but let us know and we'll do our best.

Build 887851158v1.6.92026-07-05 20:24:09
- Minor visual adjustments to 7day night/day band - Polar latitude sunrise/sunset rendering updated; for part of the year glyphs are skipped, they previously stacked on each other at midnight. - Background snow animation fixed for light mode
Build 887814633v1.6.72026-07-04 21:36:43
- Minor updates to te reo Māori weather conditions. - Reopen on last-viewed location - Cap total locations at 20.
Build 887362230v1.6.52026-06-24 16:55:30
- Worldwide alerts that some agencies publish in several languages no longer show up as duplicate copies, you'll see each warning once, in your language where available. - Alerts now show the affected area. Each weather warning lists its region, so warnings for different areas are easy to tell apart. - The animated backdrop now matches the forecast. Snow vs rain in the background always agrees with the conditions shown on the dial.
Build 887239356v1.6.42026-06-21 17:40:06
Offline & reliability - Forecasts saved on-device - works with no signal. So now when you're sailing, anchor behind that headland you'll still be able to use cached data. - A failed refresh keeps your last forecast ("Offline · saved …" + tap-to-retry) instead of blanking. - Fixed an airplane-mode hang (offline errors no longer retried). - Recent data reused (10-min window); pull-to-refresh always fetches live. Worldwide weather warnings (new) - Non-US locations now get official warnings via the IFRC Alert Hub (US still uses Apple Weather). - Alerts auto-expire (drop off the 7-day view once lapsed); per-alert source + link shown. - Settings → Data Provider shows a passive "Worldwide Alerts" reachability status. Info page gains Get in touch, Review, and App Store links. Updated a few more weather conditions in te reo Māori.
Build 887210040v1.6.12026-06-20 15:37:55
Refining Apple Intelligence "Weather Story" a little more and added email contact on Info page.
Build 886706582v1.4.22026-06-19 03:58:09
Build 887173509v1.6.02026-06-19 17:40:56
Weather alerts (Apple Weather). Official severe-weather warnings now appear below the dial; tap it for information of a warning's severity, summary, source and a link to full details. Tide database expanded ~3×. From 5,372 to ~17,781 offline tide stations — the NOAA/TICON gauges are now supplemented with FES2022 model points at coastal towns that have no nearby gauge, so far more coastlines get a tide curve. Maramataka (Māori lunar calendar) now has its own toggle and no longer requires Te Reo Māori - both live in a new "Aotearoa / NZ" Settings section. The info panel gained grouped, evidence-weighted academic sources (NZ studies, international literature, practitioner notes), a work-in-progress note, and a clearer highlight on tonight's night. Weather Story refinements. The on-device, private Apple Intelligence summary is now more conversational and proportionate (no drama over a light breeze) and reads its numbers correctly (humidity, highs and lows by time of day). Dial & interaction polish. Switching 12h/24h/7d now keeps your selected moment instead of snapping back to now. The selected day's date moved into the centre badge (bigger, clearer), plus Apple-standard navigation buttons, a fixed UV-glyph position while scrubbing, smoother wind spokes, and a viewable visual guide in "How it works."
