For example – both the Fountains and Reflections layouts offer the unique combination of six par 3s, 4s, and 5s, increasing both your chance for a hole-in-one and birdies! Garland also offers a large driving range area, putting greens and chipping areas for practice before you start your rounds. Garland Lodge & Golf Resort is located in Lewiston on over 3,000 acres of unspoiled Northern Michigan wilderness. Guests can experience four unique championship golf courses - all from one Golf Shop. History of Garland The story of Garland began in 1951 when Herman Otto, a German-born American businessman, built a nine-hole golf course in Lewiston, Michigan for the enjoyment of family, friends, and employees of the Detroit-based company, Garland Manufacturing. Garland was opened to the public in the early 1960s and began to grow under the guidance of Herman’s son, Ron Otto. He designed the second nine holes which opened in 1973 and the third and fourth nine-hole layouts that opened in 1978 and 1980. Following a gas explosion that destroyed the club house in 1985, Ron and Joan Otto made the decision and commitment to create the ultimate four-season recreational and corporate retreat and began construction of the main lodge which opened in 1987. The 34,500 sq. ft. lodge is constructed of 15-inch spruce and lodgepole pine from British Columbia and if laid end-to-end would measure 3.2 miles. The four fireplaces, including two stretching 34 feet tall, required 8,600 sq. ft. of split fieldstone totaling over 510,000 pounds. At about the same time, golf was starting to grow in Northern Michigan, In response, Ron Otto designed four new spectacular courses beginning with Swampfire in 1987. At Monarch and Reflections, which opened in 1990, and Fountains which opened in 1995, Otto created beautiful layouts that fit naturally into the Northern Michigan environment. The natural backdrop of 3,000 acres of unspoiled Michigan wilderness provided a perfect setting for Garland’s four courses. Ron Otto’s sweat and blood are in this soil. He personally designed and oversaw the construction of every yard of the 72 holes, and his passion and dedication can be seen in every inch. In 2009 the ownership changed hands from the Otto family to New Frontier Capital. That fall the resort started a facelift with full remodeling of the Lounge, Dining Room, and Lobby. .
