After introducing video transcriptions, much improved formatting of the transcribed text earlier and the German localisation earlier this week, Sussurro is back with new shiny improvements for you:
1. MANUAL LANGUAGE SELECTION
Sussurro has amazing auto-detection capabilities: just pick an audio file and the app reliably guesses the language the Whisper AI model should use for on-device transcription. New in version 1.3, you now have the option to manually select a language and tell the engine to use that for transcription: from the menu in the upper right corner, select (from a list of 99 options!) the language you want to "force" and Sussurro will oblige. This helps greatly for short audio files or poor recordings.
2. SPANISH, JAPANESE, ITALIAN AND FRENCH LOCALIZATIONS
Sussurro's UI speaks for 4 more languages, in addition to English and German.
3. TWEAKS AND IMPROVEMENTS
A general touch of polish never hurts!

Oops. During Sussurro's German localisation I did introduce two bugs:
- Portions of the transcribed text may occasionally not appear on screen, while being present in the copied text or saved files.
- The alert asking if you want to remove an audio file recorded inside Sussurro after it was transcribed appeared and immediately disappeared.
I really want to express my gratitude to Vladimir for reporting both issues, allowing me to submit a fix in as little time as possible.
If you missed the release notes for Sussurro 1.2, it was a pretty big release:
1. TRANSCRIBE VIDEOS
You can now select a video file and start transcription. Sussurro takes care of extracting the audio track, making video transcription as efficient and accurate as regular audio files.
All with the privacy that Sussurro's local-only private processing guarantees you.
2. SELECT PARTS OF THE TRANSCRIBED TEXT
After transcription, you can either drag and select (macOS) or tap, hold and drag to select part of the transcribed text for copying or sharing.
3. SUSSURRO FLÜSTERT DIR JETZT AUF DEUTSCH ZU
I was overwhelmed by the warm welcome Germany, Austria and Switzerland reserved to Sussurro.
Undoubtedly, I must thank iPhone-blog.de and iPhone-ticker.de for their incredibly kind and positive reviews that helped many friends who speak German to discover Sussurro. My thank you takes the form of a complete localisation of the app in the beautiful language of Goethe.
Full disclosure: I studied German in school and was actually pretty good at it, but I also took advantage of AI translation tools; if you notice any mistake, please send me a screenshot and the correction!

Here’s what’s new in Sussurro 1.1:
1. TEAR DOWN THAT WALL
Transcriptions in the original release could look, ahem, like walls of text: accurate, but with no new lines, making them not very comfortable to read.
The easy way out most apps in this field take is to send the transcribed text to an AI for “cleanup” and formatting, but that approach means saying goodbye to privacy.
On top of that, we all know ChatGPT & co. engage in hallucinations, so that approach is not only bad for your privacy, but it can also lead to changes in the content of the transcript (which, by the very nature of audio transcription, can already contain errors to start with).
You know Sussurro’s commitment to keeping your audio and transcriptions completely private and on-device, so sending your text to a server was never an option.
I think I have found a good solution that is completely local and respectful of your privacy, and starting with this version, you’ll see the text organised in a much more pleasant way.
Depending on the content and structure of the audio, the new approach might overcompensate the previous “wall of text” effect, dividing some concepts into a few paragraphs too many.
I will work more on this and tweak things if necessary, but I wanted to share this update right away, just a couple of days after launch, because the app behaves so much better and I’ve heard from many of you that this was your most wanted improvement.
2. WHITESPACE INTO THE VOID
Transcriptions occasionally too many spaces at the end of sentences, or multiple empty lines at their end. Now the transcribed text is "ready to use" without extraneous white space.
3. POLISH
I’ll spare you the “bug fixes and improvements” bit as much as possible, but a 1.0 always has some things that need fixing. And so I fixed them.
In the process, I also tweaked the look of the transcribed view to make it look better depending on the platform: on iPads, you now have larger text and more padding on the sides, and things have been adjusted to look better on iPhones and Macs as well.
