What’s New Version 6.5.0

New Features: - Switched from drawer menu to bottom tab navigation for easier access - Added filtering options to map and list views to help you find relevant incidents faster - Notification list now shows status indicators (New, Read, Resolved) so you know which alerts need attention Bug Fixes: - Fixed duplicate notification registration for some users

Description

Hazards Near Me NSW serves as your authentic and reliable gateway to emergency updates in New South Wales, Australia. The app shows information sourced directly from emergency services and provides up-to-date alerts and data about bush fires, floods, and tsunamis in NSW, as well as incidents within a 50km radius outside the NSW border. Establish personalised watch zones to receive incident alerts specific to your area. With the creation of a user profile, synchronise and monitor your watch zones across multiple devices for consistency. Expansion plans are underway to include more types of hazards in the app, such as severe weather conditions. Remember, it's critical not to rely solely on receiving a warning before taking precautionary measures. Combine app usage with other information channels including websites, local radio, social media, and personal observations to make informed decisions during an emergency. Bear in mind that during emergencies, data and power services may become unstable. For feedback and FAQs, visit: https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/news-and-media/stay-up-to-date/hazards-near-me-nsw

Useful but frustrating
Notifications remain on the badge even after the event has resolved, please fix that bug. If it’s resolved I don’t need a notification alert

Great except notification clearing
Good app. Really important and useful. Please fix the notifications - I have to tap between Map and Notifications exactly 3 times, every time, to get rid of the red bubble.

Watch zones
Created a Watch Zone when first downloaded. Now app has decided I don't have one, I do, and continues to send notifications that I don't. Waited months for an update that might fix it. None forthcoming so deleted it as it's not actively maintained. Just another useless government app that they spend millions on but no accountability for bad tenders.

Needs more work
Notifications need fine tuning. I only want to know if there is a fire in my watch zone. Nothing else. Fire danger ratings and heat warnings I already get from the BOM and radio, and I only want this app pinging me if there’s a fire in my watch zone.

Can’t get rid of notifications
I like the app. However, there are a number of issues: 1. Can’t easily find fire ratings. The app knows where I am. It should put the fire rating large and loud in the map (especially total fire bans). 2. Expired incidents should be cleared automatically. 3. I’ve clicked on all (many) notifications and I still have a ‘1’ on the icon— geez…

Missing closed hazard access
You should still be able to view the details of a hazard after it’s been resolved. In most cases, while threat to life may have passed, the hazard effects are still there. So if I’m in the area, it would be useful to know what areas I should avoid? So instead of advising “Incident resolved” but giving no details of it, please provide the details too.

Recently fails to load
I’ve noticed over several weeks the app no longer loads when clicking on a notification despite trying to load. Furthermore it fails to launch when simply searching and attempting to open the app without clicking on the notification

Failed during major storm
This week we here in the shoalhaven region of NSW were hit by a cyclone bomb and had over 300ml of rain with winds over 100kph. We lost power and wifi/internet ... but we could send and receive txt msg. I still received notifications from the Hazards app but couldn't open them to read because it required data/internet/wifi .. so we didn't know what was going on. It would be great if you could send txt msg to people within an area like the police do. Otherwise it's a great app. Cheers

Useless App
I downloaded the app thinking I could get alerts with all rain at the moment, and I couldn’t even login! I tried with my Apple and Gmail accounts, even creating an account unsuccessfully. It kept saying my password wasn’t strong enough no matter what I typed! What a big waste of time.

Notifications can’t be found
Notifications flash across my iPhone screen but when I go to the app no notifications can be found . App tells me that I have to create a watch zone to get notifications. I keep creating the watch zone ! It’s there ! Last year when there were fires within two blocks of my house, there were no alerts to anyone in my area..

Fix Notification design flaw
Design flaw in Notifications. They expire, yet the app continues to display the red icon - clicking that results in ‘no longer active’ - so why keep the unread notification? Frustrating waste of time. The app has no way of providing feedback. “In app feedback” is a gift for you, yet missing. The ‘developer response’ is generic copy/paste, clearly showing review/ are not read. Prove me wrong?

Customisation Preferences
This app is definitely useful. I would love it though if we were able to customise certain aspects of the app’s design to be more accessible. I would love to be able to increase the font size or change certain colours so that it was easier to read or differentiate between some of the icons

Notifications
Notification received on screen but when the app is opened there are not notifications. Also open up watch zone but map that opens is 5 times the size needed.

Bring back original app
This “hazards” update much less intuitive than the fire’s near me app. Over complicated. Need to be able to modify it for specific situations. Now always opens on maps for Europe, UK, France etc WHY ?

Hopeless in the current weather emergency
Currently there are 13 hazards listed on my notifications, but one one is current - the rest are resolved. Why aren’t they deleted, or at least listed as resolved. When I’m being hit with bad weather, I don’t want to know what happened yesterday

Constant notifications from anywhere
This app is constantly going off on my apple watch sending notifications no where near me. Not sure what has happened, but it didn’t use to do this. I’ve deleted my watch area, yet still getting notifications across the entire state. Will need to uninstall.
Missy Belle2025-01-15

Major gap in functionality
You send alerts but there is no way to see what the actual change in status of the incident is when you go to it. You really need an activity log so that you can easily see what the status change is that caused the notification. Otherwise you’re wondering if the app isn’t updating or what the status was and what’s changed.
★★★★★
account features only work for 3rd party logins
when we were getting mostly burnt out in the 2019 NSW fires the old Fires near me app was a useful resource. its successor Hazards has been a mixed bag. registration by email / password has never worked for me. finally cracked & joined it to a throwaway Google account

Essential for bush living
Extremely useful to have when living in bushfire prone areas, but could benefit from the addition of a map overlay showing wind speeds and direction. As others have mentioned - would be good if ‘resolved’ incidents were cleared from the active notification list and/or perhaps shown on the map with a different icon to indicate a recent event that has been resolved.

Glitchy!
Why let me create watch zones when every time I go into the app or tap on a notification the app glitches, says I have no notifications (without letting me view them) and removes my watch zones. Love the idea and that you can see where the fires etc are but it needs work.

Needs major improvements!!
I don’t need to repeat all the other reports on constructive feedback, but it really gets to a point where this is obviously falling on deaf ears. This app is supposed to be the source of truth, however its functionality(or lack of) and lack of intuitive interface makes you really not want to use it…. Now that really does say something! I’m beginning to wonder why I use it…
★★★★
Used to be good
Maybe it is the last ios updates but the app now keeps on returning Server error and no saving watch zone. As useless as the people that burn our bush by either back burning on windy days or not being able to maintain their containement lines. In Sydney they are burning more than Nature does. Should allow 0 stars.

Update needed to fix bugs
I like this app for the notifications but no matter how many times I set a Watch Zone it says I don’t have one. It’s quite annoying because it’s a vital app.

This app is not compatible with iPhone SE 2nd generation
This app is not compatible with iPhone SE 2nd generation running on iOS 18, it can’t remember ‘my watch zone’ anymore and when the app is opened up it shows ’server error’ repeatedly. I am extremely concerned that this app is not working properly as this fault could be life threatening to me and my family!

Useless
If I could rate in the minus I would. Each time I set Notification Zones then later check the app it says I have not set any. I have created and saved several and the same thing happens. When I do get a notification alert I can’t check the details because all I get when opening the app is “Server Error”. I’ve tried deleting and downloading the app again but that changes nothing. The old Fires Near Me app worked fine. Now I have a useless warning app.

Useless App
This App is so glitchy that it is useless. Every time I open the App it freezes and requires closing and reopening. Notifications remain flagged until they are manually removed. So many irrelevant notifications that it results in not using the App (the boy who cried wolf). I live in a bushfire zone and need an App that is reliable, easy to use, relevant and accurate. The Fires Near Me App was brilliant and used extensively during the last major fire season. The current Hazards App is totally useless and may well result in people being harmed if they rely on it during major fire events.

Fix bug issues please!
App opens up and alerts with “server error” and then proceeds to flash a few times, deletes my “watch zones” and I have to close the app and open it again to make it sync with current hazards and put in my watch zones agains. Deleted app to no avail. I need this app as I live in a bush area and need to know when fires start and when they get worse or better etc for evacuation or coming back home!

Great app
Just needs to implement a quick access near me function which displays hazards nearest my current live location. This seems expected functionality given the name.

Improvement to notifications
It would be great if the app could be improved so that notifications disappear automatically once an incident is resolved. I tend to now ignore notifications as every time I see the red notification showing because when I click on it, it says incident is resolved. I think that is not a good idea to leave them showing if they are resolved because a consequence of that is we don’t give them the attention they deserve. Please consider this - remove notifications automatically once resolved.
