During the Cold War, the fear of conflict between the West and the Soviet bloc pushed the rapid development of weapons to give each side an advantage. By the 1950s, most air forces had traded in propeller-driven aircraft for jets and an arms race began between the nuclear-capable strategic bombers and the fast interceptors to combat them. Combat helicopters also saw major advancements. Armoured warfare tactics and technologies were revised, leading to the development of the main battle tank and the armoured infantry vehicle. In many armies, the submachine gun and the battle rifle were largely replaced by the more modern assault rifle. Submarines and missiles saw huge gains in effectiveness.
