Whether you are a professional geoscientist or curious about the rocks around you and the stories they tell, Rockd allows you to explore and learn about the geologic record, contribute your own observations, and log your journey through the geologic record. Features: - Instant access to geologic and geographic summaries of your current location via a Dashboard - Interactive global access to more than 290 geologic maps, with more being added weekly - Explore the landscape with a dynamic, 3D virtual globe - Save maps for use in the field with a built-in map caching system - See your past location and explore paleogeographic maps from C.R. Scotese and GPlates - View Macrostrat stratigraphic columns where available (beta) - Explore published literature containing mentions of mapped geologic units (when available) via xDD (formerly, GeoDeepDive) - Elevation data for most points on Earth from digital elevation models (DEMs) - Add your own field observations even offline; tag features from Macrostrat and the Paleobiology Database - Record strike/dip or trend/plunge for geologic features, using your phone's compass - Track your progress through the geologic record privately, or share it with others - See the public activity of other users and share your own and other public checkins using unique URLs Rockd is produced by the Macrostrat lab in the Department of Geoscience at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. This is the first update to Rockd since 2019. It reworks and modernizes the foundations of the app to set the stage for future development. Most functionality is the same, but internal data handling and storage have been simplified to provide a more stable user experience. - Many bugs with state management and navigation have been addressed - Functionality on newer devices (e.g., camera support) have been fixed - Apple ID login has been added The map system has been substantially improved for speed and expressiveness: - A virtual globe and 3D terrain have been added, allowing new ways to explore the world’s geology atop its landscape. - The map now makes maximal use of screen space on small devices - The cache system has been totally replaced by a quicker and more standard implementation. - Map code is now shared with Macrostrat’s web interface (https://macrostrat.org/map), allowing the quality of both to be improved. 
WARNING: Due to changes to the internal storage framework of the app, unsynced checkins saved on the device are not retained through this update. Photos and other raw material should remain accessible, and it is possible, though tedious, to reconstruct lost data if needed. Please contact us (contact@rockd.org) if you are affected by this breaking change. We thank Justin Janisch for his hard work to improve the app and are excited for many updates to come in the Version 3 series.

Beyond amazing!
OK, this app is so underrated because this has to be one of the best apps I’ve ever seen for topography fossils and minerals on top of history and a live recording of elevation and what kind of rocks are around you at all times it’s extremely helpful and fascinating

Offline check-ins don’t work
Overall the app is good. However some recent update has broken check-ins when in airplane mode. The map shows up as black. Also an error dialog pops up and refuses try go away no matter how many times you dismiss it. When online also, the map is showing up as black, and I cannot fix the location of my offline checkin

Dropped the Ball
The critical feature of this app is maps and offline maps, everything else is accessory, or, if you would agree, predatory and irritating. I hope you want to log in. The map feature works as extraordinarily as the website, but the offline map feature fails. You cannot select an area to create an offline map, you are stuck with what is mostly practical, a large area nearby. You cannot change the levels of zoom you would like to download either. An ‘oh well, works good enough’ app.

Fossils button is not working.
Fossils button is not working. Also in map view when looking at people’s checkins, when you are done looking at one, the map brings you back to your location. This is pretty annoying when you are trying to review checkins in a certain area because you have to keep navigating back to that area after each checkin is reviewed.

I love this app. I’ve used it probably for a year and a half now was very detailed. The best part about it is that you don’t have to actually google geology map or Google maps. However the smallest suggestion please add a key to the map.

I really enjoy using this app and appreciate how well it functions overall. As a geologist and amateur paleontologist, I find it incredibly useful. However, I’ve noticed that the taxa tab can take some time to load, which can be a bit challenging during my work. Just downloaded it. It’s rich with information but with a glitch
The app is amazing. It’s responsive and seems precise. I’m not a geologist so I’m learning a new language. A rock is not just quartz but of a certain era, location and of a group all of which is deep information which is new to me and I very much enjoy the granular detail o puns intended. However I cannot sign up as the page jumps all over and will not let me go beyond entering my first name and then it jumps from the signup page to the login page. Probably a “feature” of a recent update. Please fix this as I think this app has great features but would like to join in. Would be more stars

Fun App with a Major Flaw
I was told about this app by a friend that’s a geologist. He suggested using it when I’m out in the field for botanical surveys as a easy reference for local formations. Works fantastic when in cellular range, but the downloadable maps for when I’m out of a service area (which is almost every time) absolutely does not work. I’ve essentially had to screen shot the area and reference those to my GPS which is extremely hard. The All Trails app has that function and it works flawlessly. If the creators of this app got it working, I’d happily pay whatever subscription fee they would require to use

Groundwater section
Overall, I love this app. It’s such a cool tool to use while I’m out in the field or just scrolling to see what’s going on in the feeds tab. It would be good if the app incorporate a section/tab for groundwater (i.e., aquifer, aquitards, etc). Keep up the good work.
